The popular conception of Hell is abiblical, regardless of what one thinks of its morality.

Which conception do you most gravitate toward?  Annihilation after some fixed point in time with no eternal afterlife at all?

Not universal annihilation, but the idea that Hell itself is eternal, rather than its effects is problematic. Moreover, Hell (aka Gehenna), as opposed to Hades (aka Sheol) is, according to the canonical texts, clearly in the future, after the second coming and the resurrection of the dead for judgement. And the idea that Hell is the domain of Satan (aka Lucifer) instead of his future place of punishment is entirely abiblical.

Some have used the concept immorally, to justify hatred or desires for revenge, or to try to control people through fear.  But it is not an immoral concept in itself.  Humans have seen from our own experience that what seems like a small crime may end up bringing devastating results.  The concept of Hell, if nothing else, communicates that what we do matters, and that we have an eternal significance as moral actors.

Eternal punishment for any finite crime is highly immoral to me

From an ethical standpoint, yes.
