wow, what a craptastic choice American voters had until the late 1970s.  Socialists/communists, proud racists and prohibitionists.  I'd hate to be stuck in an elevator with those three.

It's an interesting thing to consider. Since the 1970s there has usually been at least one respectable or semi-respectable third party choice in each election, whereas prior to then all of the choices were often a bit much. Perhaps it points to a weakening of the two party duopoly under the surface, although polarization means they still get the vast bulk of the vote.
