In his victory speech for winning the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, Eric Adams declared himself the future of the Democratic party.

https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/albany/story/2021/06/24/adams-declares-himself-future-of-the-democratic-party-ahead-of-final-election-results-1386968

That doesn't sound like a guy who just wants to be a two-term mayor.

A big reason he won the Democratic primary was support among African-American voters who were more moderate than the progressive base. Could he have a similar coalition in a presidential primary, especially if other contenders run to the left, leaving the moderate lane open as it was for Biden?

My guess is that he would have a shot if Democrats lose in 2024, and there's a sense that they didn't do enough to appeal to the center.

He won't run in 2024. He won't be mayor until 2022. So if he runs in 2024, he would be running with just 1-2 years of mayoral experience.  So 2024 is out.

2028, maybe. But way too soon to speculate. What if his NYC mayoral term doesn't end favorably? What if some scandal occurs? What issues are going to dominate the public discourse in 2028? etc etc

And lastly -- the history isn't good for former-mayors who run for the Presidency. Who was the last former mayor to successfully win?

I'm sure that his evidently massive ego will delude himself into a run just like de Blasio's did, thereby continuing the tradition of each post-Dinkins Mayor running for President, but the prospects of such a run's potential success are dubious.

He hasn't even won the election yet.

Yang-Silwa crossover voters might give the election the Republicans.

Presidents do consistently shatter earlier records.

Biden had more experience in prominent office (36 years in the Senate, 8 years as Vice President) than anyone ever, and was older on Day One than any prior President, which had never been pulled off before.

Trump had never held major political or military office.

Obama was the first black President, and the first Senator elected to the White House partway through his first term.

Bill Clinton was the first person to become President solely on his record as a small-state Governor.

Ronald Reagan was a celebrity.

Obviously, you can go too far by looking at all Presidents that break barriers in suggesting that no rules apply. But previous mayors not getting nominated won't necessarily exclude Adams.

I can see Biden dropping Harris for Adams in 2024 if NYC rebounds in 2024---Harris is looking like a disaster waiting to happen, sadly.

Adams can appeal to moderate white voters, Black voters, and he will not alienate Black women...

I think Harris could be politically destroyed if she ran on her own in 2024
