Although I am inclined to believe that religion in general does more harm than good, for a number of reasons, that doesn't mean that it can't be useful in some cases, so my vote is "other answer" since I don't really know.

Religion brings people together in having a very powerful similarity and connection to socialize among one another. It brings in people with common similarities to socialize amongst one another.

Societally?

Absolutely and can increase sense of community. Even Stalin had too loosen restrictions on the Orthodox Church once WW2 started.
