A couple or so rural Tennessee counties voted that way.

White Yellow Dog in the South who was extra pissed at the Johnson administration over Vietnam. He didn't want to vote for HHH, seeing him as a continuation of LBJ's policies, but couldn't bring himself to vote for the Party of Lincoln so he went with Wallace instead.

He probably lives in Arkansas, Kentucky or Tennessee as opposed to somewhere in the Deep South.

Agreed, but they didn’t necessarily dislike the Vietnam War.  A regular Yellow Dog could easily have voted this way, in part because many in the South viewed Wallace as the De Facto Democratic candidate anyway.  Or they could vote for a segregationist third candidate, but still not for a Republican four years later, as you said.
