Not sure the former means much, if anything. If Trump were to announce, almost all high profile GOPers would instantly bow out and Trump take the nomination with minor opposition.

Not if you've been paying attention to the other 2024 polls.  55% is a little bit lower than what we've seen elsewhere, but not by much.  The Morning Consult poll from last month had him even lower, at 48%:
