In thr immediate wake of Canadian Confederation the debauched and corrupt founder of Canada, John McDonald, annexed the NW, stripping the indigenous of rights and forcing them into the reservation system.
The idea that Canadian Nationalism represents a nicer foil to American nationalism is a result of 60's liberals gradually working up the institutions of the Canadian state, in particular the official party of Canadian nationalism, the Liberal Party, and remaking it under that kind "progressive" and modern mask.
