YES!!! I'm a new Buffalo resident and happily voted for India, even though I'd not consider myself anything close to a socialist. This is exactly why:

Apparently he attempted to sleepwalk to victory, which might have been part of the reason for the upset.

Byron did not participate in mayoral debates. Byron did not campaign. Byron's campaign site was basically, "hello, I am Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo". I could not tell you Byron's campaign platform because it did not seem to exist (I tried to look). One of the biggest political debates in Buffalo right now is over speed cameras (which is a whole thing that I won't get into). When the Common Council passed two bills trying to abolish them, Byron (1) got the first one voided on a technicality so he didn't have to take a position on the cameras, and (2) let the second one slide into law without signing it or vetoing it so he didn't have take a position on the cameras. Again, this is a huge issue in Buffalo, and rather than taking a side, he tried to cower.

Welcome to the 716!

I realize this is an off-year mayoral primary and that's not likely to have high turnout, and further that the City of Buffalo itself is not that large. Still I'm Amazed that this race had barely 20,000 voters.

NY has been fully reopened for a few weeks now, but things still aren't back to normal fully yet, at least here in Buffalo. A lot of people still chilling at home.

My city has similar turnout in off-year council generals and we've got 80,000 more people than Buffalo. Hell, I remember when they'd barely crack 10%.

Thank god we're converting to even-year council elections in 3 years.

This is basically electoral malpractice on Brown's part. He absolutely deserved to lose, but it's got to be tempting to try to continue the race with this lack of interest in the race.

He absolutely can win as a writein. Rs got about 30% last time they put up a candidate, so he only needs to get about 30% of the D vote to reach 50 if Rs also tell voters to vote for him. And he got 45% of Ds in the primary.

I'm not saying its likely that he can get that many people to prefer him (and correctly writein his name), but its possible. The million dollar question is what argument all the Ds who berate green party voters will use to justify voting for him.

If he runs as a right in and does well it will likely hand it to the republicans, and will make anyone who supports him and chastised Bernie voters for not voting for Hillary the worst hypocrites.

This race is lean R, I remember how the splitter in Seattle sank the other DSA candidate over the most embarrassing noodle of a mayor in America, and now that dynamic is going to play straight to the conservative candidate winning.

Does Buffalo even have a halfway strong Republican candidate/party?

No, IIRC they're not even running a candidate in this race.

Yeah, so I don't see the need for anyone worrying. If Brown can turn this around, it's his right. If Walton wants to earn the Mayor's chair, she'll have to do a bit better than a primary with around 5% turnout. Nothing shocking.

Yawn. Most voters aren't politicsbrained like the denizens of this board (myself included), they're just going to see the D and fill in the bubble. I guess I could be wrong, but I really don't think I am, although I look forward to getting clowned on if so.

There is currently no write-in Conservative/Republican.

On the contrary to most though, I think Brown will pull off the upset.

This sucks. I generally oppose DSA-backed challengers (except when the incumbent is really out of touch / aloof, like Bowman v. Engel) but "vote blue no matter who" ought to go both ways. More states should have sore loser laws.

Edit: Looks like only 4 states lack sore loser laws (or its equivalent, in the form of having filing deadline for primary and general on the same day) - NY, CT, IA, VT. I guess sore loser laws don't apply to write-in candidates, given Murkowski was able to run in Alaska in 2010?

Sore loser laws are anti-democratic.

I would be upset about this if there was a Republican challenger, but seeing as there's not and it's just going to be Walton vs. write-in Brown (who may get the GOP endorsement just because they'd rather have him than Brown) it seems fine.  We're not going to lose the seat either way.  It may end up being similar to what happens to Murkowski in AK, where the Democrats may endorse Murkowski because they have no chance on their own and Murkowski is much more tolerable than her GOP opponent.

I'm actually really interested to see if this is successful.  Since I couldn't care less about Buffalo, I selfishly think it would be nice to have another city other than Seattle and Portland that's hijacked by the socialist nuts.  Maybe then the midwest cities can start sending their homeless junkies to Buffalo instead of putting them on buses to Seattle.

Oh, I'm not worried about splitting the vote or losing the seat or anything like that. I just think it sucks that the guy lost, essentially, because he was so entitled to the seat - he didn't even bother campaigning or acknowledging his challenger - and now that that (rightfully) turned out poorly for him, he still feels entitled to the seat.

I guess it's the democratic process but...what a dick. I don't think he has shown that he deserves to be Mayor.
