This is great news and the fact he mentioned a donation to a charity that prevents LGBTQ suicide and other problems with young people reflects why it's important for him to announce this. Too many young people still face a stigma and risk factors for being gay.

Although this is an important first in the league, and the NFL has handled it well, we should not forget the stories about other LGBT players, such as Jerry Smith, for example. However, I wish Nassib the best of luck in the future.

I hope we can one day reach a point where sexuality is irrelevant and there is no need to come out in the first place, as one would never need to be in, but it's clear that pretty much everyone saying "who cares?" really means "this makes me feel icky and I don't wanna think about it."

Even if most of his teammates are expressing their support for him, I'm sure that at some point he's going to have to deal with some homophobia and conservative, religion-based sanctimoniousness from some teammates. The old beliefs do not ever die out entirely. I hope he can deal with it effectively.

It's both soothing and terrifying how celebrated this has been in all corners of the public, although there's surely much discontent lurking between the surface. The NFL, both players and fans, is quite polarized along the same lines as much of the American public.
