Would people say that Cheney put people to sleep and was from a safe state with few Electors and that Bush should have picked Connie Mack III?

If Bush loses by 500 votes? Yes, any and every choice by the Bush campaign will be criticized

Interestingly Wikipedia reports that Connie Mack III was a finalist for the Dole vice-presidential nomination, but Bush didn't really consider him.

I mean in terms of helping Bush win, not in terms of his influence as Vice President.

What? He was definitely a good pick insofar as granting W. credibility on matters of foreign policy & national security (i.e., the short-term goal of picking Cheney) was concerned. Of course, they went on to spectacularly squander said credibility once they were actually in the White House, but it can't really be denied that it helped to get them there in the first place.

Honestly, no. I think if Bush lost that election Bush being, well, Bush as well as the 90s economic booms would be the reasons people would say Bush lost.
