While 1999 is culturally known as the end of its century, and 2000 as the start of a "new millennium," in more formal and academic contexts I've always heard of 2000 as the last year of the 20th century and 2nd millennium due to the fact that there was no such thing as "the year 0" or whatever.

So, what is it? Is a century defined by the first two digits of a year, or is it defined by periods of exactly 100 years, including the 1st century?

Somebody, either here or on AAD, remarked that a guy who reaches 30 technically isn't 'in' his thirties; he's just a guy in his twenties celebrating a birthday.

In the case of centuries, we don't have to make people feel younger than they are, so I count 2000 as part of the 21st century. Smile

Technically the 20th but for all practical purposes, the 21st.

However, people do have a “0th birthday” (the day of their birth) and are 0 years old for the first year of their life.

Yeah, those birthdays usually suck though. Think about it: after spending nine months in the womb developing, playing, kicking, and receiving nourishment, you're thrust into this world crying. And cry you shall until you hit the grave.

the people who insist 2000 was in the 20th century are the same people who get mad if you use Frankenstein to refer to the monster

Technically correct on a purely by-the-book level but incredibly annoying and totally wrong on a pop culture knowledge level. Because some dumbass forgot to add the year 0 when making the calendar we're stuck with it though. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense to group 2000 with 1901-1999 instead of 2001-2099 and anyone with critical thinking skills could tell you that.

By that logic, the years 2000-2099 should be the 20th century.

It wouldn’t be any more incorrect than our current birthday system.

I strongly hold that year 2000 was in the 20th century, both because it is technically correct and because I want to be able to say that I was conceived in one century and born in another century.

Because 9/11 was really the moment we turned the page on the 20th Century and the 21st Century has been defined by what happened after 9/11, I would say that puts 2000 in the 20th Century both technically and by feel.

And I say that 2000 is in the 21st for the same reason (born June 2000).

Both.  It’s any period of 100 years.  So, for example, 1900-1999 is a century, commonly referred to as the 1900s, while 1901-2000 is a century, commonly referred to as the 20th century.

Nobody actually thinks 2000 is part of the 20th century, it's just something annoying people made up to be pretentious about. New flash: nobody cares!
