This seems unlikely now but may happen randomly by chance at some point

Yea, but it’ll be way off. Probably not even in our lifetime

Eventually, I think so. But probably not for at least another 10-15 years.

Though FWIW, Republicans of Middle Eastern descent have been elected. Stephanie Bice is Iranian, Darin LaHood and Darrell Issa are Lebanese, and Justin Amash is Palestinian. Even Chris Sununu is Palestinian.

I recall there being one who got the nomination in a race in California a few years ago, but he lost the general.

Was just going to mention this. The Sununu family has some Lebanese roots too, if I recall correctly.

It's important to note that all the middle easterners mentioned (like the Sununu's) are not Muslim, but Christian. Also random but I once did a chart (cause my family is part Lebanese) and proportionally Lebanese are the most represented of any minority in America, followed by Jews, then Palestinians

Mitch Daniels is of Syrian descent as well. Middle Eastern Christians are actually pretty well-integrated into the US and the Republican party, to the point where it's kind of a surprise with many of them when you look into their family history.

Perhaps, all things are possible. I can't imagine who it might be, though.

No way. The GOP will cease to exist before it sends a Muslim to Congress.

Maybe a militantly pro-Shah Iranian American Muslim gets elected as a Republican to Congress 2022? Maybe one of Reza Pahlavi’s daughters would match that description.

I could see a descendant of affluent refugees who is a massive hawk against Iran getting elected somewhere. Sort of like Cubans in Florida. But we’re talking a tiny number of people who are just as likely to be centrist Democrats tbh.

I don't see why there shouldn't. Not all Muslims vote for Dems or are Dem politicians. If I have to made a prediction, I'd say there's going to be one in 2025.

I'm inclined to agree with the 10-15 year projections that others have laid out. Although I think it'll mostly be a fluke and probably be a one off for it's time period.

"Ever" is a long time. I don't see either party going away, so in 50 years this may seem like a quaint, unimportant distinction.

So I say yes.

It wouldn't be much different than some Democrats treat Jews.

Dr. Oz probably isn't going to win, but I think he at least proves that it won't be outside of our lifetimes.

Dr. Oz probably isn't going to win, but I think he at least proves that it won't be outside of our lifetimes.

The GOP candidate against Mikie Sherrill -- so even in a wave a Likely D seat as redrawn, but not a completely impossible seat -- is also a Turkish-American candidate named Tayfun Selen. (And unlike Oz, who was born in the United States, Selen immigrated in his 20s speaking no English.) His website doesn't discuss his religion but I'd be willing to bet he's a non-observant Muslim much like Oz.

People of Balkan ancestry can basically look white and be Muslim (true of Bosniaks, most Albanians, some Turks), and it doesn't seem to be a huge deal when they run for office. The more interesting question here is when the GOP might elect an Arab or South Asian Muslim, or a hijabi -- my guess being probably not soon, since the population in the US is not that large and is also pretty monolithically Democratic.

Those last two hashtags made me laugh.

I don't get what the joke is. Chris Sununu is Palestinian-Lebanese. His father was wholly ethnically Arab and it was a part of his politics; he was the only governor to oppose repeal of the "Zionism is racism" UN Resolution.

Probably because I made the post with the assumption that Sununu would run for Senate. But let's be honest - pretty much everyone thought he was running until the moment he announced that he wasn't.

It's a reference to the South Asian American posters here. I knew quite a few guys like you and OSR growing up but Xahar, pikachu, and lfromnj are probably more politically representative of 18-35 desi dudes on the whole. (Although mollybecky fits the latte liberal model minority political archetype that I associate with Indian Americans pretty well).

2025-2035 sounds about right if Dr. Oz loses this year.
