Quote
Former House Democrat and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich announced on Monday that he would be running to be mayor of Cleveland for a second time.

The former Representative and two-time Presidential candidate joins an already crowded field to succeed incumbent Frank Jackson as Mayor.

Kucinich joins several notable candidates in the primary. They are:

City councilperson Basheer Jones

City Councilperson (President) Kevin Kelley

Former City Councilperson and 2017 candidate Zack Reed

Cuayhoga County Republican Party Committee member and 2017 candidate Landry McNord Simmons Jr.

State Senator Sandra Williams

The Primary is September 14.

When you need to just stop: "He most recently ran for Ohio governor in 2018, losing in the primary to Democratic candidate Richard Cordray."

He hasn't been relevant for more than a decade. Even Ted Strickland is probably more relevant.

A 42 year gap in tenure must be a record, if he wins.

Now this is just definition drift. Kucinich is probably the biggest traditional liberal there is, and was a dream star not too long ago. A WWC-descendant dude who made it to office to clean up the city against corruption who, after getting broke and exiled by the mob, turned to new age commune living and then came back to politics. He was always the same dude then and now, which is why in some spaces I find him completely overrated.

Dennis Kucinich didn’t leave the Democratic Party, in fact he remains one even after getting treated like dirt, the Democratic Party just stopped letting him be apart of the “It” crowd. Can’t say the same for professional splitters in the Anderson family

Ah, but Kucinich won the city of Cleveland in the 2018 gubernatorial primary.

I would think he is almost assured to make it out of the nonpartisan blanket primary, but heavily favored to lose the general election. If he does win, he will have the distinction of being both Cleveland's oldest and youngest Mayor.

Thank you for the press release, but he still gave a speech to a pro-Assad group and has met with him several times.

Why would the people of Cleveland want Kucinich to be their mayor again?  Has it just been so long since 1979 that he's become a meme and nobody remembers what a disaster he actually was as mayor?

Kucinich was mayor for only one two-year term, and voters tried to recall him only three months into his term.  He survived the recall by 0.2%.  Why was he recalled?  He pressured the incredibly popular police chief to investigate and attack his political enemies, and when the police chief refused, Kucinich fired him on live television.

Kucinich also made Cleveland the first American city to go into financial default since the Great Depression.  To salvage the city's finances, he advocated for a 50% increase in the city's income tax, despite campaigning against a tax increase. One consequence of all this was an assassination attempt by the Cleveland mafia.  It's incredible that Kucinich accomplished all this in just two years.

At the end of the day he lost re-election in a 14% landslide.  Then he moved to L.A. and was unemployed and broke for 15 years until he was able to win election in OH-10 over incumbent Martin Hoke who was saddled with a sexual harassment hot mic scandal.

Given the politics of energy in Ohio, Kucinich's term as Mayor has been pretty much entirely vindicated. Re-examination of his decision to save Cleveland Public Power from FirstEnergy is what allowed for Kucinich's initial comeback in the State Senate, and the issue of corrupt public utilities is all the more salient today.

Not to say Kucinich should or will be Mayor again, but there is an obvious play.

GMac, you understand that the Cleveland Democratic Party machine at the time was heavily bought by said mafia who tried to kill him, right?
