I would have voted "Eurasian" if that was an option, because solely voting European would have been wrong if there were 3 options. But I voted European.

What Russia basically did was colonization. Just over land instead of the ocean. This means that the majority of the population is from the European heartland of West Russia. But you still have indigenous Siberian people in the east who could pass as Mongolian and have names like "Sholban Kara-ool".

So I voted European because that's where the people mostly originate from and where the predominant culture stems from. But to say that ignores the indigenous Siberian people and their culture.

The vast majority of Russians live in the European part of the country, historically it is tied much more closely to Europe than Asia, and well, most Russians are white (and at least nominally Christian). So ethnically as well as culturally they have little in common with other Asian countries but much in common with other European countries. (Especially in Eastern Europe, which is clearly where Russia fits best.)

So Europe is the obvious answer.

They took their religion and writing system from Greece, they share an ethnographic-linguistic group with a huge chunk of the European continent even if you exclude their own European territories. One could argue that Russia was it’s own separate entity from Europe for most of it’s history, but by the 16th century, basically once there was a single Russia, they were major player in European geopolitics, arguably the major player for the last 200 years or so, they explicitly westernized their government and elite culture to bring it in line with other Europeans in the 18th century, and perhaps most decisively, for pretty much as long as their has been an ethnographic concept of Europeans, the Russians have included themselves in it.
Pretty much the only way you don’t count Russia as Europe is if you are a Nazi high on some race based pseudo-science or a Cold War era extremist who thinks anything east of the Berlin Wall isn’t really Europe.

If you go by region, it's both. If you go by ethnicity, scratch a Russian and find a Tatar, so more or less Asian.

Its culture is significantly more European than Asian by any meaningful capacity. Plus, the vast majority of Russian citizens reside in the European half of the nation.

The Asian parts of the Russian Federation are mostly homogenous Russian due to how low the indigenous populations were/are. Even the Ethnic Republics over there are Majority Russian by a landslide (Buryatia, Khakassia, Altai) or is mostly composed of minorities by a plurality (Yakutia). I think possible seperatist movements there would be next to impossible due to how strong to the core they are to the Russian state.
