https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-more-countries-should-ban-twitter-facebook-zuckerberg-2021-6

Quote
Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday said more countries should ban Twitter and Facebook, two platforms that booted him over the risk of incitement of violence after the January 6 Capitol insurrection.

"Congratulations to the country of Nigeria, who just banned Twitter because they banned their President," Trump said. "More COUNTRIES should ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free and open speech — all voices should be heard."

I partially agree with Trump here, but that just might be because I oppose Social Media (and Twitter in particular)'s corrosive effects on our society.

What a little snowflake.

Imagine being 74 years old and crying because you can't post on Twitter.

Once again Donald Trump and fringe extremists like him are taking a real issue (in this case, the tremendous destructive power that these social media platforms have on our society) and turning into a joke and a self-serving political stunt.

1) Well one can be right for the wrong reasons
2) Does Donald Trump think he's president of Nigeria?

I don't know, but like, maybe you shouldn't have staged a violent coup?

If he likes Nigeria so much, he should move there.

Called it!

If the situation in Burma is now influencing Republicans, just wait until they start expressing a desire for Twitter to get the Nigeria treatment in this country. It won't be long.

...not that it was all that difficult to predict. Republicans today seem loud and proud about their increasingly authoritarian tendencies. I mean, very blatantly, social media has been a substantial detriment to society, but banning it outright is not the solution.

Twitter has a terrible social value and banning it would probably be a net positive in a vacuum. Of course we have the 1st Amendment here so that's not going to happen and maintaining the principle of free speech is more important than whatever problems Twitter causes.

Let's not act like wanting to regulate social media is entirely the purvey of right wingers, this is what the left was trying to do all through the Trump years. The next time the right is in power don't think that they won't want some payback and will try to deplatform their enemies.

I agree with Trump in regards unlimited big tech power. How can only a few billionaires have so much power over internet speech? There needs to be more regulations to seize these oligarchs power.

Yeah, I agree too; it is quite disturbing how much power big corporations have to shut you out completely of the internet. Just like 4-5 companies acting together means your online presence (which is the modern way of communication for better or worse) means your voice gets reduced to 0

There should be a lot more regulation and breaking up of big business in this area.

It's not even Trump being Trump and Nigerian authoritarian leader being Nigerian authoritarian leader; Angela Merkel and a few EU leaders expressed similar concerns

This is what he would very well try to do if he got re-elected, along with banning TikTok. Thank God he lost.

The right has been trying to do this from the start so lets not treat their shameless authoritarian tendencies as valid revenge.

Trump is talking about using big government to stifle internet speech and ban private companies, just so you know. He is not concerned about corporate power one bit
