They'd either frame it as self-defense ("violent thugs trying to attack the former president") or they'd condemn the murder but pin it all on the murderer themselves, and insist that Trump did not really mean what he said.

You're forgetting that conservatives aren't operating in the same reality as the rest of us. If the situation isn't favorable to their agenda, they'll try and reinvent the narrative of the situation.

[Without having read the specific scenario in your poll] No.

The only thing that could get Republicans to abandon Trump is if he made his twitter bio "they/them"

Option for "Support Trump, explain how BLM had it coming, etc." is missing. (They'd also simultaneously say the victim was killed by BLM to make Trump look bad, that the killer was antifa trying to make Trump look bad, etc.)

Trump "I can shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose supporters" who orchestrated a violent coup attempt is 100% free from any guilt of anything he does at this point in the eyes of his supporters.

Would the majority of the Republican base, or maybe even a noticeable portion of it, turn on Trump because of this? If the answer is No, as it always has been, the establishment is not turning on Trump. Of course, the establishment not turning on Trump makes it even more unlikely that the base will.

They would defend him.

He could personally abort a baby on live tv and they'd still love him.

Most of the establishment would abandon him, and it would be pretty easy for them to do that since this would result in his immediate arrest. Would most GOP voters abandon him? That's a different story, but a lot more would reject him than people here would probably expect.

There is nothing Trump could do to lose the support of the GOP. He will have their full backing until the day he dies.

Trump attempted a coup, and it was on live tv.

Not only do they still support him, they won't even acknowledge that it was an attempted coup.

They will never leave him, and they are traitors just like he is.

It's not just the betrayal of America. And forget "shooting someone on Main Street". Donald Trump's actions led to the deaths of thousands and thousands of his followers and their response was to like him harder.  The GOP has become a death cult, and the rest of America's unwillingness to come to terms with that just means the eventual toll it takes on America and humanity will be that much worse.

He probably wouldn’t win but he might only lose NC or something or if it’s in Jan-April, it will probably just draw out the primaries some more.

..but the future refused to change.

Tasteless/repugnant post even by this board's standards and in the umpteenth thread/scenario designed for Democrats to stroke their ego and collectively affirm their moral superiority in a safe space where they know they will be met with little to no dissent.

Do red avatars feel insecure about their moral standing? What would be the point of this thread if not to shore it up in one's own eyes?

People can’t be morbidly curious about Trump’s base’s loyalty?

Susan Collins: "I'm very concerned what has happened. I will not make an endorsement in this election."

Macro Rubio: "It's very disappointing what happened, but look, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris want America to become a socialist country. We must focus on their crusade to make America like the rest of the world and elect Donald Trump to make America great again."

Lindsey Graham: "I told the president his words were ill chosen. I wish it had not happen. But the Republican Party can't win without Trump and I strongly support him."

Mitch McConnell: "These were tragic events, but let's be clear: The Supreme Court is at stake here and Republican voters want President Trump to return. I will have pledged to support the Republican nominee. That's why I was 100% in to stop Biden."

Kevin McCarthy: "While it's true the president bears some responsibility for his words here, let's be very clear: This was a protest by a BLM chapter controlled by Antifa and other communist agitators. I first want Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to condemn BLM. They have refused. President Trump believes in Law and Order. Democrats don't."

Just like post-1/6, Republican politicians would hint and maybe abandoning him for a few days, then realize the base loves him more than ever and get behind Trump completely.

That's nice.

I'm not wrong though, and deep down you know it even if you won't admit it.  Your party has gone completely off the rails, and all for one man.  A man who tried to overthrow the entire government.

Explain that.

People can’t be morbidly curious about Trump’s base’s loyalty?

a) Definition of curious

- marked by desire to investigate and learn

- marked by inquisitive interest in others' concerns

These are the precise antitheses of the motivations behind threads of this kind, which have been created on a regular basis since 2016.

b) We know how you feel about Trump's 'base loyalty,' but after a certain point (in this case nearly five years of the same pattern repeated over and over again) it just gets a little... repetitive and tiresome, doesn’t it?

Do red avatars feel insecure about their moral standing? What would be the point of this thread if not to shore it up in one's own eyes?

It's driven by what is sometimes called 'morbid fascination'. The GOP's continued loyalty to Donald Trump - their collective decision to become a hate-filled death cult lacking intellect, morals, or self-awareness - is a horrific and tragic disaster of immense proportions. Such disasters trigger survival instincts and compel attention, so we can decide between flight or fight. (A particularly apt comparison,  given the "Republicans" intent to turn America into racist authoritarian state, or destroy it trying.)

Edited to remove my unfair comparison of the Republican party to members of Porifera.

It's driven by what is sometimes called 'morbid fascination'. The GOP's continued loyalty to Donald Trump - their collective decision to become a hate-filled death cult lacking the intellect, morals, or self-awareness of a diseased sponge colony - is a horrific and tragic disaster of immense proportions. Such disasters trigger survival instincts and compel attention, so they we can decide between flight or fight. (A particularly apt comparison,  given the "Republicans" intent to turn America into racist authoritarian state, or destroy it trying.)

I also think it needs to be continually pointed out that Trump is a traitor who attempted a coup, and that the Republican Party are filled with traitors who still defend his coup.

Pointing out that the GOP has morphed into a cult worshipping a would-be dictator is something we should always be talking about, so long as the GOP/Trump remain threats to democracy.

The most the GOP would ever do is claim to be "concerned" about Trump.
