What election matchups do you think we were robbed of having. The first matchup that comes to my mind is Trump and Sanders in 2016, as a recent example. Both Trump and Sanders were seen as complete jokes by the establishments of their associated parties when they began their campaigns, but would instead shake the establishment to the core, usher in the new movements that are becoming increasingly influential and powerful in this country(at the moment), and even win the nomination and essentially take over the party, in Trump's case. But I feel Sanders would've been more interesting than Clinton, not because I necessarily like him, but he was starting a populist movement, like Trump at the time, had his loyal base, like Trump, and was also fairly polarizing, like Trump. What are other matchups that comes to the top of your head?

Sometimes I imagine an alternate-universe 1976 where Frank Church wipes the floor with Reagan and I cry a little.

I don't know if this counts, but I would've loved to see a scenario where Lee Atwater doesn't die of brain cancer in 1991 and we get a Atwater run Bush campaign vs. a Carville run Clinton campaign.

Donald Trump vs Michael Avenatti in a scenario where COVID never occurs would have been a hilarious Presidential election.

The elections might have happened - I wouldn't say we were robbed necessarily in every one of these cases but they are scenarios that once could have been possible - just going back to 2000 for now

2020 - Bernie Sanders (D) vs. Donald Trump (R)
Biden doesn't run, Bernie gets nomination

2020 - Al Franken (D) vs. Donald Trump (R)
Franken never takes infamous 2006 photo, gets nomination

2016 - Bernie Sanders (D) vs. Donald Trump (R)
Hillary doesn't run, Bernie gets nomination

2012 - Barack Obama (D) vs. Rick Santorum (R)
Romney doesn't run, Santorum gets nomination

2012 - Barack Obama (D) vs. Donald Trump
Romney doesn't run, Trump gets nomination

2008 - Hillary Clinton (D) vs. John McCain (R)
Obama doesn't run, Hillary gets nomination

2004 - Howard Dean (D) vs. George W. Bush (R)
Kerry doesn't run, Dean gets nomination

2000 - Al Gore (D) vs. John McCain (R)
Bush doesn't run, McCain gets nomination

1912 or 1916: Teddy Roosevelt (as GOP nominee) vs. Wilson

1952: Eisenhower (as Democrat) vs. Robert Taft, George Marshall vs. Eisenhower

1964: JFK vs. Goldwater (chance for a Reagan ‘84-esque landslide for JFK I think, plus their planned debates could have been interesting)

1968: RFK vs. Nixon, LBJ vs. Nixon (likely would have been the dirtiest campaign in history), Humphrey vs. George Romney or Rockefeller

1972: Nixon vs. George Wallace (if only because the South would have been VERY different), Nixon vs. Humphrey rematch or Muskie, Nixon vs. Scoop Jackson

1976: Carter vs. Reagan early, Scoop Jackson vs. Ford or Reagan, Humphrey vs. Ford or Reagan

1980: Carter vs. Ford rematch, Carter vs. Bush, Ted Kennedy vs. Reagan, Carter vs. Reagan (Anderson endorses Carter)

1984: Gary Hart vs. Reagan

1988: Hart vs. Bush (no scandal), Bentsen vs. Bush, Gore vs. Bush

1992: Bush vs. Clinton (no Perot)

1996: Clinton vs. Gingrich, Clinton vs. Bush rematch, Clinton vs. W. Bush

2000: Gore vs. McCain

2004: Gore vs. Bush rematch, Hillary Clinton vs. Bush, Trump (as Democrat) vs. Bush, Clark vs. Bush

2008: Hillary vs. McCain, Obama vs. Romney early, Hillary vs. Huckabee, Trump (as Democrat) vs. McCain

2012: Obama vs. Gingrich, Obama vs. Santorum, Obama vs. Herman Cain, Obama vs. Trump

2016: Hillary vs. Jeb!, Hillary vs. Kasich, Hillary vs. Ted Cruz, Trump vs. Sanders (would have hated it but interesting to see how left and right populism would collide that year), Biden vs. Trump

2020: Trump vs. Hillary rematch, Trump vs. Cuomo (battle of the New York bastards), Trump vs. Sherrod Brown, Trump vs. McRaven

Clay vs. Calhoun vs. Adams in 1832 would've been fun.

1920:  Teddy Roosevelt vs. Woodrow Wilson or William McAdoo (didn't happen because TR passed away)

1948:  Henry Wallace vs. Thomas Dewey (if Wallace had been named FDR's VP for another term in '44)

1964:  Nelson Rockefeller vs. LBJ

1964:  Barry Goldwater vs. JFK

1968:  Richard Nixon vs. RFK

1972:  Richard Nixon vs. Hubert Humphrey (rematch)

1976:  Ronald Reagan vs. Jimmy Carter (four years early)

1984:  Ronald Reagan vs. Gary Hart

1988:  George H.W. Bush vs. Bill Clinton (four years early)

1996:  Colin Powell vs. Bill Clinton

2000:  Elizabeth Dole vs. Al Gore

2004:  George W. Bush vs. Al Gore (rematch)

2008:  Mitt Romney vs. Hillary Clinton

2012:  Newt Gingrich vs. Barack Obama (I think the debates would've been great)

2016:  Jeb Bush vs. Hillary Clinton (in this scenario I can see record low turnout as this is the matchup very few wanted to see but everyone predicted before Trump jumped in)

1968: LBJ vs Nixon

Would have been the dirtiest and most tense election in American history

1980: Ted Kennedy vs Reagan

Ted, without killing his mistress, would have been the toughest Democrat for Reagan

2004: Dubya vs Gore 2.0

Sounds boring, but I'm sure it would have been more tense if they allowed it
