Turn one: August 1-14, 2023

The 2024 electoral vote counts in each state [credit: Wikimedia Commons]

Race on to succeed Biden

As we roll into August, the Presidential election has begun to heat up. With Biden making the decision not to seek a second term, both parties once again find themselves holding at least nominally open primaries. The 2022 midterms were better than expected for the Democrats, who while losing their House majority, held onto a 50-50 Senate, with Raphael Warnock being defeated in Georgia but John Fetterman winning in Pennsylvania. Biden's last two years in office have thus been marred by Congressional gridlock, and a notable failure in getting the public option through.

On the Democratic side, Vice President Harris is seen as the Democratic standard-bearer, having enjoyed a meteoric rise in federal politics. Despite being the unquestioned frontrunner, she faces three diverse challengers. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is reportedly mulling a run, despite her previous amivalence to politics. Rounding out the Democratic field are two noted progressives; Tammy Baldwin, the Wisonsinite with two tough Senate campaigns under her belt, and Sherrod Brown, the populist Senate veteran from Ohio. It is considered likely that all three will run to Harris's left.

For the Republicans, the term 'nominally open' has taken on new meaning. Former President Donald Trump is considered likely to seek a second term, despite the proceeding legal case in New York. Trump's support in the GOP, particularly among his right-wing fanbase, remains high, and he is thus considered almost unbeatable. Only one obstacle stands in his way: Larry Hogan. The moderate former Maryland governor is reportedly planning to announce his candidacy soon, as he attempts to mount what many describe as a quixotic run at the nomination.

Primary polls

Democrats

Vice President Harris: 57.9%

Former First Lady Obama: 21.8%

Senator Brown: 11.4%

Senator Baldwin: 8.9%

Republicans

Former President Trump: 80.3%

Former Governor Hogan: 19.7%

New York case approaches end

Today comes reports that after two years of proceedings, much of it criminal, the legal case against the Trump Organization in New York is reportedly nearing its conclusion. The case, opened into various projects of the Trump Organization, such as a push to buy Buffalo Bills, became a criminal case in mid-2021 as per public comments made by the state Attorney-General Letitia James. The former President and his associates have remained steadfast in declaring the process to be politically motivated, and it has not impacted his ratings with the GOP base

Bernie Sanders: "This will be my last term"

Bernie Sanders has announced his retirment from politics at the end of his current term in the Senate. His lengthy political career has spanned eight years as Burlington Mayor, fourteen years as a US Representative, and eighteen years as a US Senator. The self-described democratic socialist mounted two successive presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020, and despite losing the nomination in both cases, has been credited with reviving the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Notes:

-72 hours for this turn

-Use your time wisely!

-There will be a debate this turn for both parties. Attendance is not mandatory but is recommended

First Primary Debates

Democratic debate

Venue: Stegeman Coliseum, University of Georgia

Date: August 11 2023

Moderator: Lester Holt

Questions:

Despite a vast popular vote victory in 2020, Joe Biden was only able to win the presidency based on a few thousand votes from swing states. Do you believe it is time for the electoral college to be phased out?

The Senate filibuster remains intact and is considered one of the reasons President Biden wasn't able to get as much as he'd like done before the midterms. Should the filibuster be abolished?

Regardless of who it may be, do you pledge to support the eventual nominee?

To Harris: Vice President Harris, some have argued that you would be a weak nominee and easy for the Republican nominee to attack as a far-left liberal. How do you respond?

To Obama: Mrs Obama, you are the only candidate on this stage to have never served in elected office, sparking questions about your experience and ability to get things done with a Republican House. Will this lack of experience impact your ability to serve as an executive?

To Brown: Senator Brown, there is a popular conception that you are only contesting the presidential nomination because of a lack of certainty as to whether you can hold onto your Senate seat. How do you respond to these accusations?

To Baldwin: Senator Baldwin, in 2018, you cosponsored the Reward Work Act, which proposed guaranteeing the right of workers in listed companies to elect one-third of its board members. Does this represent government overreach in effectively forcing these companies to set aside seats for employees?

Republican debate

Venue: Ronald Reagan Presiential Library, California

Date: August 13, 2023

Moderator: Chris Wallace

The Democratic Party has increased its strength in many southern states in recent years, with both Georgia and Arizona becoming swing states and some have suggested that Texas is up for grabs this year. What is your plan to win these traditionally Republican states?

In recent years, we have seen elected members of the Republican Party, such as Marjorie Taylor-Greene, openly harass Democratic officials and court support of far-right white supremacist groups. Are you both willing to say tonight that you condemn and disavow these groups and the harassment of Democratic officials?

It is likely that the Senate filibuster will remain just as much a hurdle to a Republican presidency as a Democratic one. How do you plan to work with a potentially hostile Democratic party who will likely attempt to use it to block legislation?

To Trump: Mr President, news has come out today that the legal case against the Trump Organization is reportedly nearing its conclusion. Do you still believe that this case is nothing more that New York Democrats playing politics?

To Hogan: Governor, you previously supported both impeachments of President Trump in your time in office. How would you win over the president's supporters if you won the nomination?

Platform:
Agriculture: Senator Brown supports legislation that protects small family farms and restricts the power of commercial agriculture. He also supports bills that would allow farmers to sell excess produce to the government, which will be used to feed students and the homeless. During his time on the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Brown has continually fought for the interests of American farmers.

Economy: Senator Brown supports the Biden Administration's American Jobs Plan, which will revitalize the nation's infrastructure and create millions of jobs in emerging fields. If elected President, Sherrod will support legislation that supports small businesses. He will push to end right-to-work laws and raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2031. He also supports a repeal of state laws that ban municipalities from raising the minimum wage higher than the state wage.

Education: Senator Brown supports more investment in our nation's schools, as education is the key to success. He will fight to make shady for-profit charter schools and colleges accountable, which will save money. Sherrod supports up to $15,000 in student debt cancellation, along with freezing interest and increasing public service loan forgiveness programs.

Energy: Senator Brown supports clean energy projects that will create high-paying jobs for Americans. Power generated by sources like Ethanol, Solar, and Geothermal are good for the environment and will be expanded if Sherrod is elected. He will also support job training sites and agencies in rural areas affected by the decline of coal and oil.

Financial Services: Senator Brown supports tighter regulations for banking institutions to protect the savings and investments of middle-class and working-class Americans. Sherrod will also work to

Health Care: Senator Brown supports expanding Medicare by introducing a buy-in at age 55, along with expanding CHIP to fully cover all uninsured or underinsured children, with an eventual move to single-payer by 2035. Sherrod also supports a public option to help lower costs, along with revoking patents for insulin and other medications.

Manufacturing: Senator Brown will fight will all his power to protect American manufacturing and American workers, whether it means introducing legislation to protect unions or banning unfair labor practices, America's workers can know that Sherrod Brown has their back.

Trade: Senator Brown supports a brand-new trade policy that puts America's workers ahead of numbers on a stockbroker's screen. Sherrod believes that American workers can compete with anyone, and he will work to expand the 'made in America' label all around the world.

Debate answer (specific): "Lester, this is simply untrue. I am running because I believe that I bring new ideas that benefit Americans more than my competitors. There is a reason that I won my last election by seven points while Trump won by eight points in both 2016 and 2020- It's because working Americans see me as someone who can represent their interests and puts those interests ahead of politics."

Despite a vast popular vote victory in 2020, Joe Biden was only able to win the presidency based on a few thousand votes from swing states. Do you believe it is time for the electoral college to be phased out?

"No, rather I support a proportional system where candidates win the number of electoral votes closest to the percentage by which they won. So if candidate A wins 51% of the vote, he or she gets 51% of the electoral votes rather than 100% like we have now.

The Senate filibuster remains intact and is considered one of the reasons President Biden wasn't able to get as much as he'd like done before the midterms. Should the filibuster be abolished?

"Yes. The filibuster is a remnant of a time where both parties wanted what was best for America, albeit having different ways of achieving it. The Republicans have shown that they do not, so we should get rid of it.

Regardless of who it may be, do you pledge to support the eventual nominee?

"Yes. Unconditionally."

VP HARRIS TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT
August 4th, 2023

In a meeting with supporters in Manchester, New Hampshire, Vice President Kamala Harris announced to her staff that she would in fact run for President of the United States, hoping to succeed her boss, President Joe Biden.

Harris has remained coy about her Presidential ambitions since Biden announced he would not run a few months ago and has instead spent her time building her campaign operation. Aiming to solidify her status as a current Vice President. This has remained a strong point as she is likely to face a strong challenge from former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Harris will begin a possible campaign with a large influx of cash in the bank, transferring many funds from past campaigns and with big donors lined up to get behind her campaign. Harris is set to announce her candidacy in Baltimore, a different location from 3 years ago in which she announced in Oakland, California, where she was born.

Michelle Obama debate answers

1. Lester, as much, as I would support the Electoral College being eliminated, it'll never be politically viable, because it's too useful to the two main political parties. What I would support in it's place is a two-round popular vote system, similar to what is used in France.

2. The filibuster has been a stain on our democracy since the beginning, used to allow Southern slave owners an out sized voice in the halls of Government. I call on each of my three opponents today, each of whom have a role to play in the Senate, not to rest until the filibuster is abolished, period.

3. There is no one in the Democratic Party that I wouldn't support if they won the nomination. Unity is vital if we are to defeat President Trump a second time.

4. The fact of the matter is, Lester, that Republicans aren't interested in negotiating with Democrats. This was the case during my Husband's administration, this was the case during this Administration, and this was the case during the last administration. It won't change just because one of us are elected to the White House.

Kamala Harris announces candidacy in Baltimore, Maryland
August 5th, 2023
Wassup, Baltimore!

First I would like to give thanks to all of the organizers of this event, and especially the young organizers who are so dedicated to this effort, thank you all so much! And also to my sister Maya, thank you so much for that beautiful introduction, Mommy would be so proud of you and all you have done, thank you so much! To our Second Gentleman, my husband, I love you Dougie and thank you so much for your love and support! Having you, and our family by my side will always humble me more than any position of authority or power.

So! Here we are, here we are. Thank you everyone so much for being here in the great city of Baltimore! The Monumental City! And home to the great giant who was a trailblazer in his own right, Congressman Elijah Cummings! Elijah and his wife gave Baltimore, and the great state of Maryland a new meaning. He was a perfect example of what a politician should act like, work like, and think like, and throughout my term as the first black woman to serve as Vice President, I've always tried to make him, and the great trailblazer and leader, Congressman John Lewis proud.

What we are beginning today, however, is about more than who I am, it's about who you are. If you are an American who can't afford college, someone who can't afford to pay your bills, someone who is scared for your life because of the crime on your street, know that you don't have to stand with me, because this campaign is about me standing with you! During my time as District Attorney, as the 32nd Attorney General of California, a United States Senator, and now, your Vice President, I have always made sure to work twice as hard so I could do just that, you shouldn't have to try for your leaders to see you and to hear your voice. They should already be honored to listen, and so that is why I am in Baltimore today.

Baltimore knows more than anyone the difficulties facing today's society. Too many people are unable to find work and too many people on the streets simply because they couldn’t afford to pay last month's rent. While corporations make a profit by prescribing opioids. Children are losing their parents to a deadly addiction. It is time we speak the truth that yes, Black Lives do in fact matter! And we must address the hard fact that racial bias exists in our policing system! Let’s also speak the truth, that too many Americans die alone because they couldn't afford to pay for medical care. While also speaking the truth, that too many politicians are more concerned with lining their pockets with big donor money rather than working for their constituents.

So that is why today, as someone who has lived through many of these problems, and someone who has worked tirelessly to fix them, I am proud to stand before you, to declare my candidacy for President of the United States of America!

This won’t be easy, and the fight will be long but I am determined to fight! And fight we will because America is worth fighting for! For the past 2 years, President Joe Biden and I have woken up every day fighting for you and I will continue that fight when I am in the White House!

We have seen what happens when we let Republicans in the White House, they abandon the middle class, destroy our economy and fail to handle major health crises resulting in the deaths of thousands! So we aren’t going back, and in fact, I’ll tell you where we’re going, we’re going to the White House!

Thank you all so much! May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America

Michelle Obama Schedule, July 31-August 14

July 31, 2023

Kickoff Speech, Kinnick Stadium, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.

I'm proud to announce my 2020 candidacy for President right here in Iowa. Iowa's been home to a lot of great moments for us. The amazing victory we had in the caucuses, against all odds about fifteen years ago, was a shining moment, both for my husband and myself, and now we look to do it again. We face a difficult challenge in Vice President Harris. But she's no more difficult to beat than Hillary Clinton was back then. I'm confident we'll prevail, and once again bring change to the White House.

August 1, 2023

Meet Voters in Akron, Iowa

Rally, Tyson Events Center-Fleet Farm Arena, Sioux Falls, Iowa

You know, it's kind of disturbing that a man who openly committed treason and insurrection against the government of the United States could be allowed to run for any elected office in this country, let alone a second term as President. You know all those lock her up chants they used shout in reference to Hillary Clinton? Well, someone should tell President Trump that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, because he should be locked up, and that's for crimes he's actually committed, as opposed to Hillary's "emails".

Meet Voters in Craig, Iowa

August 2, 2023

Meet Voters in Le Mars, Iowa

Speech at Dordt University, Sioux Center, Iowa

At most colleges across America, tuition is simply too high for anyone but the ultra-rich to afford. That's why my administration will propose new legislation that will force universities receiving federal funding to offer free tuition to any student whose family, or who personally makes, less than $500,000 annually.

Meet Voters in Sheldon, Iowa

August 3, 2023

Meet Voters in Primghar, Iowa

Meet Voters in Ocheydon, Iowa

Meet Voters in Tybee Island, Georgia

August 7-9, 2023

Debate prep, Savannah, Georgia (With Valerie Jarrett)

August 10, 2023

Rally, Savannah Civic Center, Savannah, Georgia

Vice President Harris may claim to be an ally for individuals of color, but we know better. As District Attorney of San Francisco County, and as Attorney General of California, Harris pursued policies that harmed persons of color in California, such as her school truancy initiative, which sought to send parents of truant students, most of whom were persons of color to jail. California's prisons were so overcrowded that my husband's Justice Department tried to order federal supervision, and Harris fought them every step of the way. She is not an ally for any person of color, no matter the race.

August 11, 2023

Meet Voters in Bogart, Georgia

Debate Kamala Harris, Tammy Baldwin and Sherrod Brown at Stegeman Coliseum, University of Georgia, Athens Georgia

Kamala Harris at the first Democratic Debate

First off I would like to thank NBC and the great state of Georgia for allowing us to be here tonight, Lester thank you very much for taking part in moderating and I am very excited to discuss my plans for the American People.

3 years ago today I accepted President Biden's offer to serve as his Vice President and what a journey that was, the Biden-Harris administration has passed relief for millions of Americans during a global pandemic. Invested in our roads and bridges as well as expanded broadband, and countless other things. The Biden-Harris agenda works, it works and under a Harris administration, we will not only continue the success of the Biden-Harris administration but of the Obama-Biden administration!

We can do this together and that's what I intend to do.

Despite a vast popular vote victory in 2020, Joe Biden was only able to win the presidency based on a few thousand votes from swing states. Do you believe it is time for the electoral college to be phased out?

Well, I have always been a proud supporter of reforming the electoral college, I found it absolutely insane that a candidate can win by over 10 million votes and still lose the election by the arcane rules of the electoral college and so that I am very interested in having a conversation with Americans and lawmakers on how best to represent the American people through elections including reforming the electoral college.

The Senate filibuster remains intact and is considered one of the reasons President Biden wasn't able to get as much as he'd like done before the midterms. Should the filibuster be abolished?

Yes, absolutely, the filibuster is as President Obama said best "A Jim Crow relic" and I fully support its abolition. And let's not forget it was used as a tool to prevent black people from recieving rights. In fact the longest filibuster ever recorded was in opposition of the Civil Rights Act 1957. So let me say yes I support abolishing the filibuster and ending this Jim Crow relic.

Regardless of who it may be, do you pledge to support the eventual nominee?

Absolutely and let me tell you why, there is much more that unites us a candidates than divides us and when we look at the Republican field and we see a man who incited an insurrection on the United States Capitol and still be able to seek the Presidency, it is clear that we must unite to defeat that man, and so I fully intend to support either myself or anyone on this stage (laughs)

Vice President Harris, some have argued that you would be a weak nominee and easy for the Republican nominee to attack as a far-left liberal. How do you respond?

Well let's get one thing straight, I am the only candidate on this stage who has beaten Donald Trump in a general election, let's get that straight and our ticket got the most vote of any presidential ticket in American history so let's set the record straight on that. And so I've beaten Donald Trump before and I intend to do it again.

But here's another thing, when we are running against a man who used deragatory language towards women and minorities every single day I think the strongest thing would be to nominate the incumbent Vice President of the United States who has beaten him before, who is also a woman and and a minority! And so I am fully prepared to take on Donald Trump next November.

Press Release from the Obama Campaign

The Michelle Obama Campaign is pleased to announce the hiring of Jim Messina, the architect of President Obama's 2012 reelection victory, as our director of advertising, and will be in charge of the delegate strategy in all caucus states. In addition, Messina, Valerie Jarrett, and Barack Obama, will be the three co-chairs of a Vice Presidential search committee in the event that Michelle Obama is nominated. Vetting is expected to take place throughout the primaries, and long lists will be released periodically.

VP Harris responds to Obama attacks
You know it's really disappointing to see the former first lady attack my record when she knows exactly the work I did in my past positions and in fact applauded me for my work in the past, and I mean I always considered Michelle a friend but her coming after me with those false, baseless attacks is just absolutely baffling and ya know her husband didn't seem to have a problem with my record when he offered me to serve as Attorney General of the United States.

And then I heard she was already forming a VP vetting team, well my advice to Mrs. Obama is don't count your eggs before they hatch, this is gonna be an interesting primary and I fully intend to be the one forming a vetting team when the time comes.

Thank you guys, we need to get back on the road

Valerie Jarrett responds to Kamala Harris on Meet the Press

Just because President Obama had no problems with Vice President Harris's record as a Prosecutor, doesn't every member of his family, or the administration felt the same way. Michelle didn't like it, and I know there were others who were uncomfortable with the Vice President's prosecutorial record.

As to forming a Vice Presidential search committee, we'd much rather be prepared in the event we do win the nomination, than be months behind searching for a running mate if we the nomination. My suggestion to Vice President Harris is to not complain about it, and do some vetting for running mates yourself.

Former President Trump at the first Republican debate

First of all, thank you for having me, Chris, and I surely hope for a great debate that will benefit the American people.

During the last four years, ever since Sleepy Joe Biden and his far left puppet-master Kamala Harris have taken over the White House, America has fallen behind again. The economy is anemic, China is again walking all over us, health care costs are rising, illegal immigration is sky-rocketing, the Democrat cities are doing nothing to rein in crime. I am putting my great life aside yet again to clean up the mess created by the crooked Democrats and Make America Great Again, again.

First question -

Look, in 2020, I have proven the viability of our great movement in that I have received the highest number of votes ever cast for a Republican in so many states, including those you have mentioned. Nobody believed it would be possible, and yet I have done it. During my very successful Administration, the life of so many people has gotten better, and they went to the polls in numbers never seen before. I will do it again this time, people will vote to Make America Great Again in big numbers and we will win all of these states and so much more.

Second question -

This is such a biased question, this is why people call the mainstream media fake news. Because no one, and I mean no one, mentions the violence happening in our inner cities by left wing groups such as the terrorist organization named Antifa. These people are wreaking havoc right under Sleepy Joe Biden's nose and no one does anything about it. It is unbelievable and if I am elected I will act swiftly and decisively to restore law and order. I think it is really unfair to ignore all of this and talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene who is a strong patriot, perhaps too strong for her own good, and whose passion for the good cause sometimes gets the best of her.

Third question -

Look, I am so proud of what the Republicans have been doing to stop Joe Biden and his socialist puppet-masters from getting their way with the only caveat that they should have been doing even more because the Democrats were still able to implement parts of their radical agenda. I absolutely support keeping the filibuster so that we can ensure that if these crazy people ever get power again, they will not be able to destroy our country as we know it.

Personal question -

Of course it is. These Democrats have been out to get me ever since I declared my candidacy is 2015, because I have fought so hard to stop them from ruining our country and I have opened the eyes of the people on the tremendous fraud and corruption they have been committing for so many decades. They are hell bent on taking me down, first with the Russian hoax, then with the fake impeachment trials, they even impeached me after I left office. This is only the latest fraud on the American people, a bogus story and witch-hunt. The Democrats in NY have ruined the state and the great city of New York, turning them into shadows of what they used to be. Now, instead of fixing the disaster they caused, they are focused on harassing me. It will not work!

Hogan for America campaign launch

https://twitter.com/govlarryhogan

Concord, New Hampshire  Kickoff speech
“Hello Concord, citizens of New Hampshire, and my fellow Americans! I am so honored to be here in front of so many people of this great nation here today. Ya know, I have been to NH a few times now, and it’s been a great experience coming here every time. My good friend governor Chris Sununu served this state very well. I’m here today to make an announcement. An announcement I never once actually thought I would be making. I stand here today, remembering the legacy of the Republican Party. Abraham Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt. Ronald Reagan. And I’m proud to stand here in front of you and announce that I, Larry Hogan, am seeking the Republican nomination for President of this great nation! I am a proud moderate Republican, my record will show this, and I believe in a Republican campaign not about bigotry and homophobia, but of acceptance, unity, and patriotism. We have right now a former president running who was a failure as a president and is very dangerous, and right now I’m calling on not just Republicans, but independents, democrats, libertarians. Americans. The American spirit is strong and if we come together we can get back to the legacy of presidents like Lincoln and Roosevelt. We need a president who will fight for African Americans, who will let the LGBTQ+ community know they’re heard. But who also will fight for Republican values, I believe we can do this! I know the road ahead will be challenging but it’s a challenge I’m willing to face! Thank you, God bless you all!”

Team Harris joins TikTok

Vice President Harris and her campaign have joined TikTok in a show of force to attract young, first-time voters in the Democratic primary and the general election. 2 accounts have been created under Harris' name with a personal @KamalaHarris account while her campaign uses @KamalaForThePeople. The personal account will feature all things Harris including updates on her Vice Presidency and the campaign account will feature behind-the-scenes videos and updates from the campaign.

Harris' first post on her TikTok account was a montage of her campaign events and her career. Harris then did a quick video talking into the camera about her policy positions, including her plan to raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour.

Harris's personal account will be updated daily by campaign aides.

Tammy Baldwin Campaign

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin  @ Xten by XtenIndustries, on Flickr

Platform:
Healthcare: Tammy Baldwin has advocated for Medicare for All since her days in the Wisconsin legislature. As President, Tammy will work to pass single-payer healthcare, ensuring no American goes broke just to pay for their care. Prioritize reducing drug costs through allowing purchases from Canada, giving discounts to healthcare facilities that service low-income communities, and passing Medicare for All.

Economy: $15 minimum wage indexed to inflation within the first 100 days. Tammy has supported the fight for 15 since its inception in 2012. There’s no excuse that the wealthy have received tax breaks while the working class’s wages have been stagnant. We need to invest in childcare and paid family leave.

Taxes: The wealthiest Americans should pay their fair share to fund public works like education, healthcare, and childcare. Tammy Baldwin supports a wealth tax on the mega-wealthy, as well as cutting loopholes and carve outs in the tax code that only incentivize the outsourcing of American jobs. Our tax system should reward hard work rather than allow the wealthy to play by different rules than the rest of us.

Voting: Gerrymandering, voter ID laws, and the restrictions Republicans have implemented after losing the 2020 election are attacks on our democracy and sacred right to vote. Tammy Baldwin is committed to passing a federal election bill that is inspired by the For the People Act in order to preserve our democracy.

Trade: The trade deals of the 90s and 2000s have harmed the American worker in favor of corporations. As President, Tammy will commit to trade deals that take the environmental impact and the impact on American jobs into account. Tariffs should be used judiciously to send a message to bad actors around the globe.

Education: Cancel student loan debt. We told a generation of kids to get a good education so they could get a good job, but they are now saddled with crippling student loan debt. By canceling student loan debt, the US economy would see unprecedented growth. No federal fund diversion from public to private institutions, which just widens the education gap between the wealthy and everyone else.

Environment: Getting to net-zero carbon emissions is of paramount importance. End subsidies to fossil fuels, ban offshore drilling and declare the climate crisis a national emergency.

Endorsements and staff:

National campaign co-chair: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

National campaign co-chair: Elizabeth Warren

Campaign Manager: Scott Spector

Chief Pollster: Sean McElwee (Data for Progress)

Communications Director: Symone Sanders

Digital Marketing Manager: Caitlin Mitchell

Campaign Advisor: Chuck Rocha

Campaign Launch in Madison, WI

“The 2020 election taught us some important lessons. The first is that the Presidency is won and lost right here in Wisconsin, without the organizers, volunteers, and everyone who got out the vote in their families and communities, we would have had to face a second Trump term.

But we also learned that we cannot take one single voter or any one state for granted. We have to show up in communities, we have to be bold with our message and our plans, and we have to engage in the issues facing American families.

Joe Biden has been a vast improvement over Donald Trump, but there’s so much his administration has left unfinished. American families still face stagnant wages, growing healthcare costs, lack of paid leave and childcare, and crippling student loan debt. We keep being told to wait, to wait on the goodwill of 10 Senate Republicans to approve the Equality Act, 10 to vote for infrastructure investment, 10 to stand up for voting rights.

Like many Americans, I’m tired of waiting. I’m here to announce my candidacy for the President of the United States. We need bold, progressive leaders that are more concerned with making the lives of Americans better than with preserving a broken system. We need a President who stands up to special interest groups, who makes the wealthy pay their fair share, and who stands up for the civil rights of all Americans.

If this is the kind of bold, transformative presidency you believe in, I ask you to join my campaign. Thank you, Madison!”

Debate:

Opening Statement:

“Thank you Lester and NBC for hosting this debate, and thank you to the University of Georgia for having us.

When I was a little girl I got sick. My grandparents raised me, they cared for me, I fully depended on them, but their insurance didn’t allow them to list me as a dependent. I spent three months in the hospital and my grandparents had to sacrifice just to afford to treat my illness. After all of that sacrifice, they looked for new insurance, one that would let them add me as a dependent. Well, like millions of American families, they were hit with the dead-end of the words “pre-existing condition.”

Without government intervention, millions of hard-working families would be in the same place my grandparents found themselves in, unable to afford their loved one’s healthcare and unable to find insurance to cover them. I’m Tammy Baldwin and I’m running for President because I know firsthand the good government can do for families.”

Despite a vast popular vote victory in 2020, Joe Biden was only able to win the presidency based on a few thousand votes from swing states. Do you believe it is time for the electoral college to be phased out?

“Yes I do. But Lester, the truth is this election will be held using the electoral college. Like 2020, this election will be decided in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and my home state, Wisconsin. Democrats need to be sure we win all three in order to be elected under our current system before we have the luxury of talking about phasing it out. I’m happy to hold my electoral record in a swing state up as an example that Democrats win when we’re bold, we win when we’re honest about our values, and we win when we do not back down in the face of far right smear campaigns.”

The Senate filibuster remains intact and is considered one of the reasons President Biden wasn't able to get as much as he'd like done before the midterms. Should the filibuster be abolished?

“I’ve supported reforms to the filibuster since I was first elected to the Senate. The filibuster has been used as a tool for gridlock and partisanship. Our options are reform or abolish, the current system is untenable. The fact that President Biden struggled to pass popular bills like his infrastructure plan and failed entirely to fulfill his promise to pass The Equality Act just tells you how badly we need to address such a broken part of our system.”

Regardless of who it may be, do you pledge to support the eventual nominee?

“Yes. I have many disagreements with my colleagues on this stage, but I know each and every one of us would be head and shoulders above whomever the Republicans decide to nominate.”

To Baldwin: Senator Baldwin, in 2018, you cosponsored the Reward Work Act, which proposed guaranteeing the right of workers in listed companies to elect one-third of its board members. Does this represent government overreach in effectively forcing these companies to set aside seats for employees?

“Absolutely not. What this bill does is empower workers through reform of the corporate structure. Who do you think made those profits possible? It’s the workers! Corporations have been given tax breaks after tax breaks just for them to use those tax breaks to reward top executives with stock buybacks rather than investing in their workers. The Reward Work Act sets out to make sure the American worker gets a piece of that profit and a seat at the table in corporate governance. This is hardly ‘government overreach’ but rewarding hard work over wealth.”

Closing Statement:

“Now isn’t the time for small ideas. The past eight years have shown how badly our system needs reform. We’ve seen endless gridlock, anti-democratic movements, and a failure to deliver the big, bold change American families need. Democrats need to advocate for change, we can not allow Republican talking points to frame our political conversation.

The truth is, a $15 minimum wage is popular, Medicare for All is popular, and standing up for voting rights is popular. Just because an idea is progressive doesn’t mean it can’t have bipartisan appeal. And if you choose me as your nominee, I will fight against our broken system and for American families. Together we can move our country forward, thank you!”

Chris Sununu, John Kasich endorse Larry Hogan

https://amp.wbur.org/hereandnow/2020/02/11/new-hampshire-primary-governor-sununu

Chris Sununu- “Hello New Hampshire! How are we doing? I’m here today with Governor Hogan to officially announce my endorsement of the former Governor for president of the United States. Not only has Larry been a great friend, he has served his state very well, and just like he has done in Maryland, he will bring Non-partisan, common sense solutions to the issues facing Americans. I’m happy and honored to be joining team Hogan.”

https://people.com/politics/former-ohio-gov-john-kasich-backs-joe-biden-in-dnc-speech/?amp=true

Video from John Kasich- Hello. It’s me, John Kasich. Right now we all have an important choice to make. One of the most important. Do we allow this kind of division in the Republican Party or do we nominate a Uniter to bring all wings of the party together? Larry Hogan is a true moderate who puts people ahead of party, and he is my choice for president in 2024. He served his state valiantly, and I commend him for taking on this huge challenge. God bless you all, and I look forward to hitting the campaign trail”

NRA endorses former President Trump for another term

In a widely expected move, the National Rifle Association has given its full and complete support to Donald Trump. In its statement today, it proclaims that Trump would protect the Second Amendment rights of all Americans against leftist attacks, just like he has during his first term. The Trump campaign has thanked the NRA for its endorsement and seeks its help to form the ground game for the general election, especially in the South.
