Say there is a rematch of the 2000 race with the different twist.

Gore wins Florida and the election in 2000 292-246. 9/11 happens, Taliban is overthrown in 2002, no Iraq War, no tax cuts, and the economy heads into a recession and unemplyoment is around 6.5%.

Bush leaves office as governor of Texas in 2003 with a 75% approval rating. He is only challenged by Alan Keyes for the nominations and wins every primary easily. Bush selects former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson as his running mate.

How does it play out? Does Bush revenge his 2000 loss or is Bush this century's Tom Dewey? Discuss with maps.

I think many will disagree with me, but if he doesn´t start a war against the Iraq, Gore would be lost in 2004. I think the majority of the american people wanted someone
to bleed for 9/11 and Afghanistan wasn´t enough. And the full plame for 9/11 will hit the democrats, especially Clinton and Gore.

Captain Mikey, interesting scenario you have written.  Very good.

Bush comes back from his razor thin defeat in 2000 to claim the Presidency in 2004.

Bush hammers Gore on the recession and the unemployment rate.  He emphasizes that Gore himself campaigned in 2000 on what a vibrant economy he and Clinton were proud to take credit for.

Now, says Bush, Gore has taken this economy of which he was so proud, and has "run it into the ground."

Bush points to his very successful record as Governor of Texas, one of the largest states in the union, and pushes his credentials as a "uniter, not a divider."

As well, Bush takes Gore to task for not being strong enough in the war on terror, and that Gore's failure in that respect "threatens the security of America."

Bush therefore avoids becoming another Thomas Dewey, or the Adlai Stevenson of the Republican Party.

Your choice of Fred Thompson as Bush's running mate, by the way, is excellent.  Thompson would be a big attraction on the campaign trail.

Although, he would have to take a huge pay cut to become VP, as he makes $100,000.00 per episode in the series he is currently in.

I do believe, however, that he would accept the nomination as an opportunity to continue to serve the country, and would serve with competence and distinction.

Thompson would outshine Lieberman, I believe.

Another aspect of this scenario, with Lieberman as VP for 4 years, he would no longer have been in the Senate, and there would not likely have been a bitter primary battle amongst Democrats in Connecticut for the Senate nomination.

Although, defeated Vice President Lieberman may have opted to run for the Connecticut Democratic Senate nomination in 2006.

Gore joins Bush Sr. in the "One Term President's Club."

Bush/Thompson          296
Gore/Lieberman          242

Winfield - Thanks for your insight; another great assessment. I really think Gore would not stand a chance in '04 against almost any realisitc Republican.

FYI: I really think Fred Thompson is the most respected Republican we have today. I would really love to see him run with a Mitt Romney or McCain in 2008.

Anyhow...here's my though to a President Gore v. Governor Bush in '04. I see Bush with a big win!

Bush: 359  52%
Gore: 179  46%

Thanks, Mikey.

Wow, do you really think Gore would do THAT poorly in his run for reelection?

That's quite a trouncing you have an incumbent President taking.

I agree, Fred Thompson would be a great VP candidate for '08.

I agree as well Romney or McCain would be top flight Presidential nominees.

It is, of course, suggesting that Gore isn't able to reign in the recession. Or that the first Gore administration is full of failures. The power of incumbency is strong, and I would bet that Gore would have to stuff up spectacularly to give Bush a chance.

Gore - 331 - 51.4%

Bush - 207 - 46.9%
