It just struck me that although this is a period I am (obviously) very interested in, I am nowhere near as familiar with its historiographical debates as I am with those of 20th century German and Russian history, for instance.

Not related to the thread (can't add anything), but are you an optimist or a pessimist for pre-1914 Russia?

I think that it was gradually on its way to becoming more democratic and industrialised, although not anywhere near quick enough.

Having read a bit into this myself, would it be fair to say that the following could be answers?

  • Each of the presidents have obviously been the subject of much debate
  • The civil rights movement, the importance of various factors, organisations and individuals in its success, and the extent of its success
  • The reasons for the rise and fall of the New Deal order, the role and extent of success of the Great Society, and the extent of their legacies
  • The Southern Strategy and the extent of its role in turning the white South Republican
  • The reasons for the rise of conservatism and the New Right
  • How liberal the 60s and its legacy were/are
