Become pro-federal government, and have this philosophy sink in gradually with the general public.

Trade platforms with the Democratic Party, including positions on D.C. statehood.

Believe it or not, even the DC Republicans are pro-statehood. The national Republicans obviously don't give a sh*t, though.

You buy a house with Frank Luntz and he'll tell you the secrets to win DC as a Republican. He'll just need to do a few focus groups of straight-ticket Democrat voters to see what it takes.

The only way is that a Democrat defects to the GOP, the Democratic Party divides itself with 2 candidates in the ballot and the Green Party presents a great candidate. And even with that DC will be Lean-D

Republican Congress passes legislation empowering them to directly appoint DC's electors.

What about a political realignment that has a very different GOP and there’s an election between two Democrats that split the vote?

This thread reminds me of that 538 overview of the states back in the 2012 election. The DC section ended with the prediction that Romney probably couldn’t win it even if he beat back an alien invasion of the capital with his bare hands.

On a technicality. The state of DC (should it ever be carved out of the territory) might be unwinnable, but if the electoral votes for the remaining buildings still exist, that could be pretty feasible depending on who owned and lived in these buildings.

Incidentally, there are two independent DC councillors who are probably closer to the Republicans.

The national GOP could work to champion statehood as a starting point to make some inroads here, but of course they’ll refuse and it’s probably too late for this anyway as Dems have already beaten them to the punch on this issue.

A GOP presidential nominee faces such an actually major scandal (e.g., being caught in bed with a dead girl &/or a live boy) that they draw legitimate 3rd-party challengers - like, incumbent Senators-legitimate - from both the populist & RINO wings, thereby splitting the conservative/center-right vote & allowing the Democrat to win WY with ~30% of the vote?

Okay, you got me there!

I still can’t see how R’s win DC, that being said. Even a confirmed puppy killer could win that place if they ran as a Dem.

The general election would need to feature more than 9 Democrats running against 1 Republican. And even then, unless the 92% of Democratic Washingtonians split evenly the Republican still might not win…

The clock is turned back to 1864 and Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party enfranchises the city, including all blacks, to vote in presidential elections a century before they actually could.

1) The area of DC where people live is granted statehood in line with current proposals, in exchange for the establishment of a small, skeleton government for rump DC.

2) The RNC moves a few staffers into the rump DC. Some of them takeover government positions in the local rump DC government.

3) After hearing of the plan, GOP state legislatures and congresspeople stall consideration of a constitutional amendment to strip rump DC of its electoral votes or prevent residents of the rump DC from voting in presidential elections.

4) The RNC staffers who live in the rump DC all vote.

5) Republicans win rump DC's 3 electoral votes!

6) The RNC moves staffers in and out as needed to ensure continued GOP dominance of the district's electoral votes.

Easy. Cheyenne metro sees the same population boom the rest of the Denver/frontrange area has seen; give it a few decades and Wyoming's going Dem.

They would have to eventually flip the black vote.
