Just a wrong set of states. Merge the small ones. Split the big ones.

Yes, exactly. I don't know why Dakota was split into two states to begin with; ND and SD should be merged into one large state (called Dakota or something like that).

It was quite literally a power grab by Benjamin Harrison for the GOP to admit that area as a ton of states at the same time to get more Senators for the Republican Party, and it's still paying dividends 130 years later.

No joke: look at the dates of ND, SD, ID, WY, MT, and WA on this map.

No although given how common straight borders are, perhaps the US should have better drawn states instead. I know the great plains are an area where it is hard to draw boundaries due to a lack of natural features but there is always a river, creek or some hills that are good enough. For an easy example, the Dakotas should be East-West, with the Missouri river acting as the boundary for at least most of its length

Plus there are plenty of areas outside the Great Plains with bad geographical borders.
