I am curious about their relationship were they always close or were their times they were distant either during or after Carter's presidency?

I caught a documentary on vice presidents somewhere where a very old Carter mentioned he picked Mondale for his insider expertise, so he didn't pick him purely for amicability. It sounds like they had a decent enough professional relationship. I'd imagine the extremes, friendship or pure hatred (like Kerry/Edwards, McCain/Palin, or Trump/Pence), are pretty rare.

I remember reading that Mondale once considered resigning in protest to Carter's malaise speech.

Carter campaigned with Mondale in the 1984 primary.

I remember reading that Mondale once considered resigning in protest to Carter's malaise speech.

IIRC, he considered either resigning or at least stepping down from the ticket in 1980 due to protracted & bitter infighting with Pat Caddell, whose one of many ideas that Mondale had a problem with was for Carter to deliver the malaise speech, but I don't think Mondale's resignation/withdrawal consideration ever arose in regards to any disputes with Carter himself.
