Covid cases are surging in India, and it is wrecking the country with new mutations. I think Biden should issue a travel ban to India like how UK and Canada is doing. There is a CDC travel guidance against going to India right now, but not in the same way how Canada and UK have a ban on Indian travelers.

Aren't half of Americans already vaccinated and it's easy to get a vaccine anyway. Overhere in Canada the vaccine was slow but has been picking up steam, it stills a while before there is some sort of herd immunity

Didn't Trump already enact one during the initial covid wave?

I imagine there could be some travel restrictions, like requiring a negative test result before travel or quarantine on arrival, but almost certainly not an outright travel ban.

It's ironic that through this entire crisis, the US under Trump had one of the laxest border controls in the world. Most other countries banned all foreigners, and those allowed entry were subject to mandatory quarantine at their expense.

India is going through a horrible surge of sick and dead right now.
I just saw the national news, where they showed video of normal (poor) citizens burning (cremating) their loved ones, in a nearby open field, right off the road in a large city. They were using just sticks, logs and wood in a large pile, placed underneath the bodies.
I'm not even sure if that would even be enough heat to cremate. Just horrible circumstances for the people in India.

When this disaster is over, India will be by far #1 in the death toll. The US will be third, after Brazil. 4 and 5 will be a tight race between Russia and Mexico.

All five have/had anti-science, anti-mask, anti-vaxxer loudmouths as their national leaders. Coincidence? I think not.

Yes.
This is extremely important and should be done by the Biden administration ASAP.

It's such an indictment of Trump's total incompetence as the leader of his own movement that he never thought to use COVID as a "told you so" about his travel bans. Imagine if in January he had shut down all travel to and from China and then later the Euro "socialist" countries. Liberals would have thrown a fit only for the rest of the world to then get ravaged by COVID while the US had only a couple cases that fell though the cracks that Trump could vilify as rule breakers and Chinese spies. It would have been such a victory for America First and right-wing politics generally with Trump practically guaranteed a second term. But Trump was just too self-absorbed and uninterested to even care.

I think China might be in the top five as well. They have been hiding their numbers for around an entire year now so we don't know for sure though without the data.

Oh, no, China did truthfully stop the spread of the virus after the lockdowns of last January/February. The CCP mobilized its entire police state to enforce the lockdown, and hasn't hesitated in enforcing more lockdowns when necessary. It was crude, but effective. Now there aren't even rumours of hidden outbreaks in China.

I don't doubt that China's true death toll is multiple times its official number, but it definitely isn't more than the low five digits.

But still, the CCP's culture of cover-up and propaganda turned a manageable problem last Fall into a global catastrophe.

The US already requires all people traveling to the US to have a negative test result

My mother, a natural born US citizen, was required to get a negative result that was no older than 72 hours before flying back to Chicago from Jordan

I certainly hope so. I think we should enforce strict travel bans on any country with a major outbreak. The top of that list includes India and Brazil. If there's going to be a serious viral mutation, it's going to happen there. I'm very concerned about the situation in India. A country that size and with that density could see total cases and deaths more than the rest of the world combined. We could send our entire surplus vaccine stockpile and it wouldn't make a dent due to their sheer numbers. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can to help. Apart from humanitarian aid, we need to close off the borders with some of these countries.

I think these travel bans should work both ways. We should be forbidding people from this country from going to those countries, except on an extremely limited basis (I would include humanitarian aid in that exception). This isn't anything like Trump and his Muslim ban. We need to look at the data itself. I would've supported a strict travel ban with Italy, Spain, and France a year ago. I don't really care which area of the world we're talking about. For example, the US-Canada border is still closed to non-essential travel.

Yes, the handling of coronavirus in China was so bad, everything is back to normal, only short localized lockdowns since May 2020, and they were having massive pool parties in Wuhan in August 2020.

He better not.  There are nearly 200 million Muslims living in India and it will be called a Muslim travel ban.

Biden administration to restrict travel from India starting Tuesday

Quote
The Biden administration has confirmed that the US will restrict travel from India starting on Tuesday in response to the surge of coronavirus cases and variants being observed in the country.

"On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Administration will restrict travel from India starting immediately," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday. "The policy will be implemented in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in the India. The policy will take effect on Tuesday, May 4."

The administration will issue a 212(f) order restricting entry into the US for foreign nationals who have been in India within the previous 14 days, a source familiar with the move said. Airlines have been told of the decision, a source said.

...

The policy will not apply to American citizens, lawful permanent residents or other people with exemptions. As with all international travelers, individuals who fit that criteria traveling from India must still test negative prior to leaving the country, quarantine if they have not been vaccinated and test negative again upon reentering the US from India. The restrictions also do not apply to humanitarian workers.

But Trump was just too self-absorbed and uninterested to even care.

When Covid first started showing up in the news, right-wing conspiracy sites like 4Chan were some of the first to actually take it seriously. They examined the infection rate, criticized China for lying about the danger of the virus, and spouted schizophrenic rumors about how the virus was "population control" by the elites. Then as soon as world governments started taking it seriously, their narrative immediately flipped, and they began calling Covid a "hoax" designed to control the masses. These people don't have the attention spans necessary to coherently advocate for their deluded worldviews.

Apparently, you can shut down travel to a brown country because of risks from an invisible threat, but you can't do it because of risks from visible ones...

I support travel bans in both situations because the reasons were valid for each of them but okay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
