Yeah, and his father said he voted for Hillary.

I think that really says a lot. His party became so different during his lifetime that he voted for the wife of the man who had defeated him 24 years earlier.

He ran a campaign in 88 which involved pretty overt race baiting so I think the extent to which it's changed has been somewhat exaggerated.

From a race-baiting party to a party that still strongly supports a president who incited an insurrection.

Pretty big change, I think.

It's always so weird to me to remember that Bob Dold and Donald Regan actually exist and actually were Republican politicians, with the latter working for Ronald Reagan.

And don’t forget Dob Bole, At Uchanan, Teve Torbes, and Lamar Alexander #2:

The Trump era did allow the outright crazies to take over with out a doubt. I just feel like when we overstate the degree to which the current Republican Party is different from what it was pre-Trump it sort of let's them off too easy for the race baiting and "law and order" rhetoric which paved the way for Trump. Not to mention that W literally launched a war which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people and literally founded the institution that's carried out Trump's immigration policies. Nixon, Reagan and both Bushes may have been more likely to respect institutions but judging by the amount of human suffering they caused I don't think you can say they were any better then Trump.

FFS. I remember the Bush administration to be crazies. Neocons, evangelical dominionists, deregulators galore. Cheney, Rumsefeld, Condi, Powell- all war criminals for their actions in Iraq. Ashcroft built up a surveillance state with the Patriot Act. Yoo and Gonzales penning torture memos. Bolton, Wolfowitz, Perle rigging the nation for forever war. All of these people were more competent and stayed on for far longer than Trump's revolving-door cabinet.

You're absolutely right.

Holy sh**t it's like no one remembers how insanely bitter politics were during the 2000s, even Democrats who would be considered milquetoasts today were raging against Bush. The Republican Party has been obstructionists and gaslighters since like Reagan, but the 2000s is when they really cut their teeth with Fox News going into overdrive drumming up support for the war, polarizing the nation between those for and against it, splitting American civil society, while millions died overseas and trillions of dollars of treasure was wasted.

Trump's greatest crime has been causing us to forget how crazy the Bush administration was- and that same administration laid the groundwork for our current era! The brink-of-civil-war partisanship I'm talking about- that was Bush! The post-truth big lies- that was Bush! The dirty political tricks and weakening of our democratic system in the 2000 (and quite possibly 2004) election- that was Bush!

Bush and Trump are in the same category of terrible presidents! And Reagan too, he gave them the blueprint of Republican presidential malfeasance! Maybe Nixon too but he's sort of too far back to precisely compare.

regarding Bush, you do not, under any circumstances, "gotta hand it to him". He is not a FF, has never been a FF, and should be as denounced as badly as Trump.

Another common thread and something that drives me the most crazy is that during the Bush era liberals fetishized anti-Bush conservatives as much as they do anti-Trump conservatives now. I remember distinctly how during his second term after he'd become unpopular there was a parade of conservatives claiming he was an embarrasement to conservatism and lifelong Republican/career military officers going on MSNBC to denounce him. Ironically in some cases it was Paleocons like Pat Buchanan who have since become pro-Trump. It's like liberals will form a temporary alliance with whichever conservative faction is out of power at the moment. In 2030 you'll probably see Stephen Miller and Kellyanne Conway on MSNBC speaking out against the unique evil of the JD Vance administration.

The thought just occurred to me that if I were JEB! I would be even more depressed and insulted than I already am about my political future that my own brother didn't even bother to consider writing me in. And not just once, but twice apparently!

Bush is a criminal who should be in jail but the Democratic party has a childish mania for bipartisanship so they prop him up.

Then Bush did a disservice to the nation, by aiding Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

When one candidate is literally a fascist, hellbent on retaining power at all cost (even destroying the Constitution), the only other option is his most viable opponent.
Exactly

I told a lot of people this in 2016 (which had an unusally high number of third party/write in votes) and they got mad at me

That said, I actually don't believe that Bush wrote in her name.

He told Jim Clyburn he was a "savior" for endorsing Biden, for he was the only Democrat who could have beat Trump. Even Bush's secretary confirmed this
https://www.businessinsider.com/george-w-bush-tells-clyburn-a-savior-for-backing-biden-2021-1

Considering how much Trump hates and publicly insulted the Bush family, I doubt they would do anything but vote for Biden

That said, a small possible remains that Bush voted for Condi just because he didn't want to see Texas go blue. Unlikely but I could see that

I also wonder if Bush is just saying this to save face with the GOP.  Even that is still a disservice to the country, because the Republican Party won't be saved that way (if it can be saved at all).

"Anyone who doesn't vote for who I want is a fascist."

The projection here is enough to build a mountain.

Oh and by the way, fascism is a left wing ideology. It supports big government whereas the right wing supports restrictive government.

It doesn't really matter how someone like Bush voted. He's a former president and, as such, isn't a normal voter. What matters is how the general masses vote.

I do give credit to Republicans who refused to vote for Trump, even if they just abstained or voted third party.  It’s an indication that they’re not as blindly partisan as they could be.  At least they put basic decency and civility above partisanship, and took a lot of flak from their party for doing so.

Having said that, this in no way makes someone like Bush an FF.

Because political ideologies are that simple.

Is the right really back to this, and using f***ing PragerU and other random Youtube videos to back up this notion?

How embarrassing.
