I see the appeal, but I won't insist.

No, but for reasons different than the ones in my signature.

Yes, although probably not for about ten years and after I'm already married and have had a stable career for some time.

And though I've expressed concern about population overshoot at various points and some have labelled me "anti-natalist," I defer to what I personally consider to be the best defense of child-rearing in the modern world:

Quote from: Industrial Society and Its Future
204. Revolutionaries should have as many children as they can. There is strong scientific evidence that social attitudes are to a significant extent inherited. No one suggests that a social attitude is a direct outcome of a person’s genetic constitution, but it appears that personality traits are partly inherited and that certain personality traits tend, within the context of our society, to make a person more likely to hold this or that social attitude. Objections to these findings have been raised, but the objections are feeble and seem to be ideologically motivated. In any event, no one denies that children tend on the average to hold social attitudes similar to those of their parents. From our point of view it doesn’t matter all that much whether the attitudes are passed on genetically or through childhood training. In either case they ARE passed on.
205. The trouble is that many of the people who are inclined to rebel against the industrial system are also concerned about the population problems, hence they are apt to have few or no children. In this way they may be handing the world over to the sort of people who support or at least accept the industrial system. To insure the strength of the next generation of revolutionaries the present generation should reproduce itself abundantly. In doing so they will be worsening the population problem only slightly. And the important problem is to get rid of the industrial system, because once the industrial system is gone the world’s population necessarily will decrease (see paragraph 167); whereas, if the industrial system survives, it will continue developing new techniques of food production that may enable the world’s population to keep increasing almost indefinitely.

That would require me to first have a divorce, as neither I nor my wife believes in miscegenation.

That option has passed me by, but if my body were 25 years younger, yes I would, definitely.

Even if my material/financial situation (which morally disqualifies me and anyone in a similar situation) markedly improved, it still wouldn't be in my self-interest. In the same way that sitting through "Eurovision" wouldn't be.

Yes, I would. Although if my female friends are any indicator of the enthusiasm for having kids among my peer group, the chances seem pretty slim. I haven't decided yet if it'd be a deal-breaker for me, but I'm hoping I won't have to find out.

I definitely want to have children, although thinking about this subject makes me feel existentially uncomfortable for reasons that I may not get into here.

Definitely.

It's one of the red lines I'd set for a serious relationship. If we can't agree on that, we're almost certainly not compatible.

Probably depends on whether we're talking about a utopian Star Trek-like future, where we have warp drive and explore the galaxy, or if it's a post-apocalyptic future, where the kids can't even go to school because we're too busy running away from zombies all day.

But aren't you yourself a product of such a thing?

Anyway, the answer is yes.

Would I like to? Of course!

But imagine being able to afford to raise a child? Yikes. Counting down the days until my parents retire to give a glimmer of hope.

Should be broken down by age.

Up until the last year or so, I was on the fence. But after hearing so much about it from HCP, I am convinced that I would love it.
