They were dazzled by the power of the crowd (strength in somewhat organised numbers), and assumed that power would persist beyond the march. Unfortunately for them, the tie that bound them together was a cult of personality around an unreliable joker who left them to rot, and the demoralisation of that betrayal probably shattered whatever collective power they had left.
