In my opinion, you have to look deeper - into the psychology of these types.

Firstly and for the most part, those who effectively roleplayed as poor, downtrodden victims are part of a privileged class. They may "dress down" due to personal preference or otherwise seem like humble lumpen, but a very significant portion of these people were upper-class white business owners. I can't even remember how many people who were interviewed or arrested admitted to owning their own businesses. Just as a broad-based example, fewer than 1 in 10 people are business owners and earn an average base salary of $70,000 per year (compared to $37,000 per year for the non-business owner).

These types have never known what it's actually like to be systematically disenfranchised, which is why even the slightest inconveniences are blown out of proportion by them into some major perceived form of injustice. On the flip side of this coin is the fact that these individuals rarely ever face genuine consequences for their actions or behavior in social, economic or political settings; this is why so many of them over the years have freaked out over a country moving away from a dynamic where they have exclusive control...to one where they only have overwhelming control, insisting that they are now "the minority" or otherwise pure and pious victims.

I'm sure many honestly believed they'd get away with it because they've been getting away with everything but literal murder (and sometimes even that) their entire lives.
