They did this because Zarif opened his mouth and blamed the IRGC/Russia for the nuclear deal falling apart in a leaked interview, which while I despise the latter two, is just wrong.

Ultimately, whether this would have happened after the upcoming presidential election or several months back means very little, for a long while the Reformist camp has lost any and all support along with political power. I expect to see the regime ban and bar several uppity groups and purge some civil services in a little while.

Anyway it looks like Zarif is finished. Seems like a stupid decision. Who is now going to be the polite "moderate" english speaking guy to go on Western TV to defend the Iranian position?

No one. If the deal gets signed or not, they’ll appoint someone to get rousing comments in for internal consumption.
