Hurricane Katrina, Troop surge in Iraq, Virginia Tech, Subprime Mortgage Crisis, 2008 Election, and then everything from Michael Jackson's death onwards.

2004 is around where my memory starts so that makes sense.

For the record, I tried to edit the poll to include people's suggestions, but it looks like the vote totals are locked to the # of the answer, so any new answers would have to be at the bottom, and that just messes up the whole aesthetic. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I did change "August Coup" to "August Coup/USSR breakup" though.

Starting with the 2000 election, the events I don't saliently remember despite remembering other stuff that was going on at the time are:

2001 anthrax attacks
US invasion of Afghanistan
Columbia disaster
Abu Ghraib
Indian Ocean tsunami
Plame affair
Assassination of Benazir Bhutto

I was about 6 when Nixon got on the helicopter and flew away, can't truly say that I have any direct memory of it though I do have memory of adults being very wound up about the whole thing.  If course, well after the fact the actual hearing and the whole Daniel Schorr narrated documentary was utterly riveting.

As for the list in the OP, if it happened in a mountainous area, the Balkans, the Caucasus, the stans, my memory can be a bit hazy.  Everything else i can place.

The first event I remember is New Year’s Eve 1999/New Year’s Day 2000. I remember every event listed from 2000 on except for the Anthrax attacks, the DC Sniper Shootings, the Columbia Explosion, and Abu Ghraib. I remember that the death of Michael Jackson occured on my last day of 8th Grade and that it pushed the Iran protests out of the news cycle.

Not being American means there's stuff like the Obamacare debate which are gaps in my memory, but the ones I remember are:

Iraq surge - Or atleast I remember a lot of coverage of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars towards the late 00s.
Subprime mortgage crisis
2008 election - I remember Obama winning because that was discussed at the time as being historic, but I wasn't aware of the actual campaign.
Death of Michael Jackson
Haiti earthquake
Arab spring
Japan earthquake/tsuname
Libya intervention
Bin Laden death
2012 election

I was born in 1987. I remember the 1992 election because I remember being young and standing in line as my parents were waiting to vote. It seemed like a long line. I remember the Oklahoma City bombing because I was home sick that day. I mixed up the NATO bombings. I shouldn't have voted for the 1995 bombing. I do remember the 1996 election and that Clinton was going to be reelected and I easily remember everything after that.

So, to answer by number, #16, #19, #21-56. I voted for #20 in the poll but I shouldn't have and I can't remove it.

Why aren't events like the collision with Theia and the Permian-Triassic extinction event included?

Why aren't events like the collision with Theia and the Permian-Triassic extinction event included?

Joke explained: No humans are alive who remember these events, and indeed, no humans were alive during these events, which means that the inclusion of these events in the above poll would be pointless.

Literally been there and affected by it: Israel Lebanon war of 2006
Remember well: 2012 election, bin laden raid, the Arab spring, the NATO intervention in Libya, the Japan and Haiti earthquakes, the death of Michael Jackson.
Remember vaguely: 2008 election, Mumbai terror attacks, protests in Iran.

I randomly turned on the TV one morning in 2003, and I saw the Columbia disaster live on CNN.

Born in 1999: invading Iraq & then the 2004 election are the first listed events that I distinctly recall. Literally lived through Katrina as it first came through SFL on its way to NOLA. Voted 31, 33, 35, 38, 40-41, 43-44, & everything from 47 on.

Ah, but do you remember Janet Jackson's boob, or has that been mentally repressed because of the trauma that it afflicted on all American youths according to all pundits c. 2004?

Born in the early 90s. The 2000 Election is the earliest one I can vividly remember. I remember Clinton's impeachment but too young to understand the what's & why's of it.

Some of the things I don't remember following in the last 21 years were the DC sniper shootings, Abu Ghraib, Indian Ocean tsunami, Plame affair, Israel-Lebanon War, Russia-Georgia War & Mumbai attacks

The first event here that I distinctly remember where I was when I found out about it was 9/11. I'd just gotten home from school and my parents were watching the Twin Towers collapse on TV.

After that, I remember the U.S. invading Afghanistan and Iraq, the 2004 election (I was a middle school Kerry supporter), Hurricane Katrina, Cheney shooting Whittington, the Virginia Tech shooting, the subprime mortgage crisis, the 2008 election (I was high school Obama supporter), and everything from the death of Michael Jackson to the Sandy Hook shooting.

Most of the other post-9/11 events on this list I didn't know about until I either learned about them while working on projects in college or researching them on my own.
