I've seen this poll for 9/11 and a couple of other events, but I made one with a bunch of events to see how far back the forum's collective memory goes, how far back 50% goes, how far back 20% goes, etc.

For me, the cutoff is around 2000 for this list. I remember the 2000 election and everything after, but not really anything before.

I've lived through 2/3rds of this list, but the first one I distinctly remember hearing about as it happened was 9/11. Wasn't really aware of US politics before 2003 or so.

Voted 26, 27, 30, meant to vote for 31, 33-35, 38, and everything from 41 onward.

Born in 1996, 9/11 is the only pre-2005 event that I remember, but it is a very vague recollection. After 2005, the only ones I don't remember are the Plame Affair, the Israel-Lebanon War, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the Russia-Georgia War (though I have an extremely vague memory of hearing about it, but not really knowing much about it), and the Green Movement protests in Iran.

I'm not much for foreign policy anyway, even now.

1988 election: Although it's a very vague memory. Basically my parents told me that the guy they voted for lost and I had to get to bed. Still one of the very few 80s events I have any recollection of at all, (another is the Twins' 1987 World Series victory because my dad celebrated so much it woke up my brother and I, something my mom was not happy with him about.)

1991 Gulf War: Probably the first actual event that I was fully tuned into and followed. Well I didn't exactly follow it closely but was well aware of it and the lead up to it. It was discussed a lot at school even in first grade.

After that I voted for the 1992 election and everything onward. Surprised the poll didn't include the dissolution of the Soviet Union because I would've voted for that too. Another fairly notable event left off was the Columbine shooting.

I kind of remember some pre-2000 things like Princess Diana's accident, but I was pretty damn young and decided not to count those.  Starting with the 2000 election (when I was 7 and about to turn Cool, I remembered everything pretty vividly without having to look anything up except:

Abu Ghraib (2004) - I kind of remembered this after looking it up, but it did not immediately ring a bell.
Assassination of Benazir Bhutto (2007) - I still don't remember this.
Russia-Georgia War (2008) - I still don't remember this, either...
Mumbai Terror Attacks (2008) - I kind of remembered this after looking it up.
Green Movement Protests in Iran (2009) - I definitely remembered this after looking it up, but I am not sure if I knew that this is what it was called.

I remembered everything else very well.

Columbine should definitely be on the list. It was a pretty iconic event and as someone on AAD put it once up until 9/11 that was the date referenced as a day of American horror.

I actually remember the teachers at my school being in a very somber mood and you could tell something had happened and things weren't right, although they didn't tell us and tried to keep on a lid on it for obvious reasons (something that would be impossible today with social media and smartphones of course.) It wasn't until I got home and turned on the TV and it was already on the news that it hit me. The next day at school of course the teachers did mention it and we were all very uneasy the whole day. Frankly the fact that it was such a big deal and that school shootings aren't really treated like that anymore is kind of the most disturbing part...

Well, I was in college when Richard Nixon resigned. Wink The Russia-Georgia war, protests in Iran, and intervention in Libya didn't come to mind, so I checked everything but those three.

P.S.: I assume you meant Virginia Tech shooting.

I remember the subprime mortgage crisis (or more specifically the Lehman Brothers crash), the 2008 United States presidential election, the death of Michael Jackson, the Haiti earthquake, the Arab Spring, the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the NATO intervention in Lybia, the killing of Osama Bin Laden and the 2012 United States presidential election.

The earliest memories of events in the world I can recall come from 2007, but more consistently from 2008.

Everything from the 2000 election onwards. I was too young/wasn't really cognizant of the news in the 90s.

Is this thread asking about how old you are and when you became interested in "current events?" If so, the question fails to get to the point.

Everything from the Gulf War (i.e. Operation Desert Shield) onwards.  I wish I could remember the Fall of the Berlin Wall as well, but apart from past footage, I simply can't recall watching it happen on live television.  I must have been in first grade at the time (my mother held me back a year).

Everything in 2000 onwards minus Valerie Plame and the DC Sniper shootings.

I do have very vague recollections of Columbine.

I remember everything going back to the 2000 election except the Columbia disaster, assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the Mumbai terror attacks.

Other notable events I remember vividly:

Steve Irwin stingray death (2006)
Habbo Hotel Raid/Pool's Closed (2006)
Scientology protests (Project Chanology) (2008)
Christopher Dorner shootings and manhunt (2013)

The cutoff for me in an Australian sense is around 2001/02, but I wouldn’t really say I followed international news from an non-Australian perspective up until the Obama years, so some of the American centric stuff from the Bush years I don’t really remember.

But a big one that was huge here but missed the poll - the 02 Bali Bombings.

The VA Tech shootings was something I largely learned about in high school, a couple years after they happened. The 2000 election is the least voted item I remember, though I supported Bush because he looked better on TV.
