Why are they still in business if no one trusts them.

"The" media can only be as good as the people consuming it. The solution would be to acquire (or, more precisely, use your already existent) critical thinking skills and (both as individuals and a global community) create an environment in which a profit-oriented, sensationalist, deceptive, divisive, and indeed destructive 'reporting' style cannot flourish, but the vast majority of Americans / people in this world have shown no interest in doing that because said values (along with other related ones such as blatant superficialty, inauthenticity, herd thinking/behavior, gratification of the most ludicrous needs a consumer culture could possibly propagate, indifference to supposedly "singular" cases of suffering, etc.) are the perfect description of their own existence. It’s so much easier to use "the media" as a scapegoat or an "own" to "prove" that a certain side doesn’t care about "the facts" than it is to tackle the problem (which, as others have pointed out, is anything but a partisan affair) at its root, and that would (among many other things) require taking a long, hard look at ourselves. Put very simply, I don’t have any faith in the media because I don’t have any faith in people.

Wait for a new medium with limited access to take over. Something that naturally invites over the Walter Cronkites before the Olbermannns and Hannitys and Carlsons...

Newspapers f&*ked over The Gilded Age and early Progressive Era, but then radio neutralized that...then TV took over when that became too spread out...for a blink of an eye, the internet was a backup.

There appears nothing on the horizon that’s going to do to internet what internet did to television.

I can't imagine why people don't trust the media.  Total head scratcher.

First, make them trustworthy again (probably not going to happen).

People from both parties believe the media is inherently biased against them, but that isn't at all true. It wasn't too long ago when MSNBC of all networks fired liberal host Phil Donahue for opposing the Iraq War, among other things. And we just went through 4 years of CNN being hell-bent on attacking Trump right after propelling him to the presidency. It’s a cliché, but it really does happen to both sides. Why? Profits, duh.

Some people in this thread seem to realize that, but most people don't, and that's really unfortunate. Holding the media accountable must be a non-partisan & non-ideological affair.

The media very clearly has a pro-establishment angle. In 2004 that meant shilling relentlessly for Bush's wars, in 2012 it meant supporting Obama and denouncing Ron Paul and these days it means supporting the Democratic Party wholeheartedly while indirectly slandering Bernie Sanders, since the most establishmentarian of the Republicans like Bill Kristol switched sides.

1.The media can stop shilling for the CIA, the military, and Israel.
2.The media can stop shilling for corporations and neoliberal economics.
3.The media can stop spewing anti-white rhetoric like white privilege, systemic racism and critical race theory.

The media will do none of these things, so trust will not be restored.
Right on all 3.

The smaller and more alternative news of the various people’s of the United States need to be sponsored and supported by the government. The corporate press needs to go though.

In these bitterly divided times, it warms my heart that so many people from so many different political perspectives and walks of life can agree on how horrendous the American "new" media is.   Purple heart

How do we fix it though? When the media lies or aids in fraud or materially does so by omission, they need to be held accountable in court. Fraud is not speech. You just need to find the right lawyer and judge.

The one thing that could change the media is if people boycott their advertisers.
