... the same government for the first time since the NSDAP was in charge in both countries.

Austria already has Conservatives-Greens in charge, Germany could get it in November or something.

Kinda funny that Germany and Austria never had the same type of coalition at any given point in time since WW2.

A striking stat, which will no doubt surprise many.

Even if you consider the pre-1986-Haider-less-FPÖ some sort of liberal, not anti-foreigner-driven „FDP“, both countries missed the same coalition at the same time by half a year:

Cabinet Schmidt III (SPD-FDP) lasted until October 1982, while the Sinowatz Cabinet (SPÖ-FPÖ) in Austria was sworn in in May 1983 ...

The closest similarity in terms of governments in both countries probably was in 1970, when Willy Brandt (SPD) formed a coalition with the FDP.

At the same time, Bruno Kreisky (SPÖ) won the election in Austria and formed a minority government, tolerated by the kinda-liberal FPÖ (on paper, more so than now at least).

But the FPÖ was not a member of the Liberal International in 1970, only after 1979, so the comparison ends there.

BTW:

If Söder somehow becomes Chancellor candidate instead of Lush@, the political strength between Union/Greens would be more similar to Austria than with Lush@.

Söder would win a Kurz-2019 style victory (according to a new poll), whereas Lush@ would only barely beat the Greens in September ...

I mean, I would say that the Grokos were more similar, considering they only switched the leading party.

That would be interesting indeed. Austria is generally to the right of Germany though.

Yeah, GER is more than twice as urban as AUT.

Urban areas are voting more leftwing.

It would be a similar government in name but not in terms of policy or strategic orientation. Both the ÖVP and the Austrian Greens are considerably to the right of their German counterparts.

Also note that the CDU has consciously refrained from calling itself a 'conservative' party for years. It is a center-right party with centrist ambitions and even calls itself 'the Center' (die Mitte).

Depending on the issue. There's a reason why CSU is an abbreviation for Christian Social Union.
