I don't know enough about the political and demographic history of New Mexico but I do find it interesting that it was solidly Democratic in the New Deal era but then between 1948 and 1988 was consistently Republican with the exception of just barely going for Kennedy in 60 (I'm guessing due to a heavier Catholic vote then usual) and then Johnson in the 64 landslide.
