Looks to be a strong polarization between non-Hispanic whites and all other races, with the only distant outliers being New Jersey and Montana.

Clearly can't be a very good timeline.

Just take a look at this map and you'll see how similar it is to your electoral map:

Maybe for Democrats it's Jon Tester + Generic D and Republicans have Chris Christie + Generic R?

Semi-plausible 2040's map with a religious left movement oriented around climate change that otherwise turns off the most secular states?

That still doesn’t explain OR, unless Knute Buehler or someone like him is on the R ticket.

True.  Perhaps Portland has less than half its current population for some exogenous reason?

The West makes this map harder to explain than it otherwise would be.

Those results in the Deep South and New England are plausible in a post-Roe world with a substantial group of social justice oriented Dem Evangelicals, but I'd expect that to lead somewhere more like this based on the size of the existing Dem base in Southern states:

This seems like it could be a down the line trends map, but the Democrats go full on hard left and run on confiscating wealth, and major nationalizations paid by huge tax increases on the middle class. LA/MS/SC could all be explained by growing minority population, in AK, oil finally collapsed, idk what happened in MT, and the tax explanation doesn't explain VT, maybe all of the Conservatives in MT moved to VT?

I'm not even going to try to explain this map; it's wilder than a West Wing map, seemingly following no rationality or pattern. I don't see how VT, RI, NJ, CT and OR go red and MT, LA, SC and MS go blue. I think your rationale between making LA and MS go blue, though, is a surge in black turnout/population, but it still doesn't seem realistic. The map is just plain impossible, especially given that you appear to imply it's for 2020, since it uses 2020 electoral votes.

When I made this I was thinking way long-term, ignore the EVs.

As others have said, polarization between whites and non-whites.

Yup, can't really think of what else could produce this map.

White liberals from Portland and Eugene heed TalkElections’ joke suggestion to game the Electoral College and migrate en mass to Missoula. This gives MT a 3rd congresional district but also delivers OR to the GOP at the presidential level.
