A significant enough figure that her passing warrants a thread. She was ninety.

Quite a complex and interesting woman (her parents too) andva bit overlooked compared to the other post-war 'grand dames' of British politics. Bit 'misused' in the SDP too. RIP.

Very sad; a sign of her talent was that both my maternal and paternal grandmothers (one being a communist and the other verging on membership of the Monday Club) both respected her hugely and liked her.

A very interesting figure; she was the most influential on the Liberal Democrat’s out of the Gang of Four.

The first person my mother voted for  Smile

Sir Ed Davey has called her a 'liberal lion'.

Probably an underachiever. Could have done more in the Labour Party and obviously the SDP never reached the halls of office as per initial predictions. Seemed liked a nice person. RIP.

Yes, an assessment with which the elderly Williams might have agreed with herself. But in some ways though, she was the sort of media friendly politician who was ahead of their time in that respect.

Almost rejoined the Labour party after Blair became leader, it is credibly claimed.

Wasn’t she married to Bernard Williams? Must have been some house to grow up in

IIRC, didn't she fly all the way to China and then have to fly straight back for a Commons vote?

And had quite an "interesting" private life more generally.

I was under the impression that she had more Question Time appearances than any other contributor, but it turns out Kenneth Clarke overtook her, so she is in second place. She was far from the typical 'retired politician turned commentator' however.
