We are giving military aid to the United Arab Emirates, and they are are belligerents in the war in Yemen, killing innocents every day, abuse migrant workers, and other things that are quite frankly, un-Atlasian. They shouldn't get our money and that is why I introduced this.

Is there concrete evidence that we are doing this in Atlasia, rather than only in RL? GM confirmation or SoS feedback of some sort?

I'd love to hear this too.

Of course, if we are, I wholeheartedly support Ishan's bill.

I don't think this is a good idea. In this timeline, Atlasia has already abandoned Saudi Arabia, a key ally in the Middle East. Taking this action to weaken ties with another key ally, the UAE is not wise. Iran is very happy to see all of this right now as their influence spreads throughout the region. The proxy-conflicts in Lebanon and Syria are probably slanted towards Iran ITTL due to our abandoning of Saudi Arabia, and this would shift those conflicts even more towards Iran. Assad and Hezbollah would come that much closer to winning their respective proxy-conflicts.

I agree.  We could lose the region to Iran. I would also be interested in discussing reapproaching the Saudis.

I object to the motion. We would all be better off with GM input on this.

If and until the GM provides further input, at present we should in theory only be providing arms to the UAE if they satisfy the criteria set out in the Arsenal of Democracy Act. I strongly suspect the UAE has not met that standard and therefore should not be receiving any arms from us at the moment, but other confirmation is always welcome.

Also, the UAE is not explicitly blacklisted in that law, so they could hypothetically be receiving arms through some sort of loophole. So the SOS should definitely clarify.

Does the F-35 program exist?  If so, could we hypothetically include the UAE and Saudis, but provide no training?

I'm interested to see if they'll be able to fly them without training or not.

What is the purpose of supplying fighter jets to countries without training people how to use them?

Alright, while I haven't had time to properly format a story (which will, regardless, be on the next issue tomorrow or this weekend), I don't want to leave you guys hanging until then, so:

The situation pertaining the UAE specifically and internally is much the same as it is IRL, with the caveat that they are basically the last country we have friendly relations with in the region in our reality. No Saudi involvement or relations, but we still provide the aid this bill seeks to eliminate, and in fact several Atlasian companies in the country (particularly in Dubai) and outside still benefit from association with the UAE. Of course, if the President or SoS wish to change this association, or partnerships like the ones discussed above can continue, they are welcome to.

Hmm. I'm leaning against this bill at the moment, but this certainly raises the need for SoS clarification regarding their intentions re: the region. Would rather not have to fly a bunch of fighter jets out to the region without a clear purpose of what to do with them in mind, either.

We cannot lose our last ally in the region.  I also advocate for rapprochement regarding the House of Saud.

To clarify, the F-35 program was cancelled by the Reservation Reinvestment Act of 2019.

I will undertake a full review of this bill and ask the GM for more information regarding the war in Yemen.
