Why did Harold Washington almost lose? Is it purely just due to white ethnic voters not wanting to support a black man? Or Is there some other reason?

Bernie Epton was very moderate. And there certainly was an element of race to it, since Washington would have been the city's first black mayor.

Would have been really something if Epton won.

Makes sense honestly, Chicago is still fairly racially divided isn’t it? But yeah, it would have been something. Would be interesting to see how much, if any different the city would be now.

Because Washington ran during the Reagan era, the cities were much more polarized than they are now, no thanks to Mayor Daley who for the most part gave WC merit based jobs and Drivers License for garbage men that didn't deserve one
