Suppose somehow Anderson wins the Republican nomination instead of Reagan. Does he do better or worse than Reagan in the general election? I think it would depend on the region (better in the Northeast, considerably worse in the South) but overall worse. But probably he still wins.

My guess is something like this:

Carter keeps most of the South, but still loses handily. Still think HW Bush could have been VP because he balanced the ticket geographically and had executive and foreign policy experience.

✓ Representative John B. Anderson (R-IL)/Former CIA Director George HW Bush (R-TX): 403 EVs.; 53.0%
President Jimmy Carter (D-GA)/Vice President Walter Mondale (D-MN): 135 EVs.; 44.4%

If the ticket is Anderson/Bush I could easily see this:

Anderson would need to pick a conservative as running mate. John Connally is a good bet (the whole "former Democrat" thing would have kept moderates on board). You'd likely get some third-party right-winger getting respectable votes in the South and West. Anderson should win though.
