Does HW Bush stand a chance in 1992 if he didn't break his famous "read my lips" promise. I'm well aware he made the right decision by striking said tax compromise with Dems, but would have happened otherwise? If he just kept stubborn on the issue?

This. The economy as well as  a terrible re election campaign are what cost him a 2nd term.
