The Texas pandhandle swung very significantly to Eisenhower in 1952. Most of the counties were Truman-Eisenhower, both by large margins. Roberts County, for example, had a 118 point swing.


What is the reason for this? I understand the point about the South, especially the urban South, trending Republican; but why so much in the rural panhandle?
And does the panhandle, or western/northern Texas generally, feel terribly Southern?
