Even with a fairly high 57% of the votes counted, the race for the second place is still extremely tight

The blank and null vote results for Parliament and the Andean Parliament (which are at 20%  and 12% of the votes counted) are extremely high, which isn't all that surprising after the events of the last couple of years, at a staggering 37% combined

AFAICT, Aliaga was pretty supportive of Castillo, or at the very least undecided about him, until an unofficial Peru Libre Twitter account had the great idea of tweeting  a couple of days after the election about Peruanizing (expropriating) Perú Rail, one of the train companies that goes from Cusco to Machu Picchu and which is owned by Aliaga

Honestly this pretty much the only election in the world I could possibly think of leaving a blank-vote. Actual human right abusing facist heir vs tankie communist, my sympathy is with the people of Peru.

Pretty absurd to compare an indigenous teachers union leader in rural Peru to anime Stalinists on twitter imo.

The party is openly Marxist-Leninist-Mariateguist (aka Stalinist),  prominent members have already began talking in public about how they need to censor and intimidate the media (including closing TV channels by force for having the wrong opinions) and about closing the Congress if they don't like that they don't pass their bills (sadly this last one is a pretty common opinion in Peru across the whole spectrum), and as is tradition with tankies the party blindly follows Russia's foreign policy goals and talking points (incl. openly defending Assad, North Korea and other Russia/China-aligned authoritarian and totalitarian regimes)
The guy seen above defending the North Korean regime isn't some random "anime Stalinist" but a candidate for Congress, as is the leading figure on the media censorship campaign, which has been openly supported by Castillo himself
Pedro Castillo himself may not be a tankie, mostly because he doesn't know that much about formal ideologies, but the party is at least extremely close to being officially tankie
And it's increasingly clear that Castillo is little more than a puppet of Vladimir Cerrón, a former governor that's been
sentenced for extremely obvious acts of corruption

Yes, there are quite a few unreformed ML's in Veronika's party and Frente Amplio, but they aren't  the main wing of the party as is the case with PL

For the sake of accuracy - PL is made by ethnocaecerists turned towards the Left. Not "unreformed," and showing traces of their journey (nationalist left populism, caudillism). The "unreformed" parties backed Mendoza and i assume will back Castillo in the runoff, with their dozens of followers in tow. Castillo has said he's not a Marxist. Whether or not you take him for his word is another matter.

Nationalist populism and caudillismo have been positions informally held by many self-proclaimed "unreformed" MLs since the days of Stalin himself

This newspaper found lots of double meaning jokes.
"Peru" is the name in portuguese of the bird "turkey". Due to the similarity of the shape between a turkey and a penis, the word "peru" in Brazil is used to refer to penis. Chota, the city where Castillo was born, is one of many names for vagina in portuguese. 69, the year Castillo was born (1969), is a name of a sexual position. "pau a pau" is similar to "head to head", but "pau" is another word for penis, since the literal translation is stick. PPK, the name of the previous winner, is also a name used for vagina.

Here chota is slang for penis, there were a lot of jokes about the "Debate en Chota" even in the larger newspapers

Now on the bad news for the government, the motion to censure Heslth MinisterCondori  passed by a large majority , 72 in favor with 32 against (29 of them from Peru Libre and its split Perú Democrático, and notably they couldn't get any member from Juntos por Perú to vote with them) an 13 abstentions, as a consequence of this the mininster is now forced to resign within the next couple andf days and Castillo has to accept his resignation and name a replacement

The new health minister, Cerrón ally and former Junín regional health minister Hernán Condori, is already in hot water for promoting ivermectin and some sort of “clustered water” as Covid-19 cures. It’d be XD if it weren’t so DX.

Such ideas on wacky Covid treatments and prevention measures were also comnon across the ranks of the Venezuelan government and the Bolivian MAS

Maduro and the Venezuelan state media's were openly promoting open the use of Carvativir "miraculous little drops" which are "100% effective against the Covid virus" and even faked medical studies to support this hypothesis, despite the drops being little more than oregano essential oils

The MAS-majority Bolivian parliament passed a law during the Añez government supporting the use of chlorine dioxide (ie bleach) as a useful treatment against covid, thankfully this measure was reject by Añez's health dept (Añez herself supported her own shared of pseudoscience crap like carrying  the infamous Virus Shut Out card) Less fortunately the new mas government went a step back and the president himself endorsed its use mere weeks after beginning his mandate

David Choquehuanca, VP of Bolivia, got infected with Covid twice and claims that he got successfully cured trough chlorine dioxide traditional medicine which included eating grass, he just received his first shot of the vaccine in January 2022 and largely to avoid getting hit by the restrictions. Oh, snd another reason he waited so long to do it was because he had heard that you couldn't ear pork, diary or fish, nor getting a shower for 3 to 5 days after getting the shot

The reason why the Andean Left is so loopy is that it is backed by traditional Indigenous clan heads and remnants of the Incan aristocracy. This is great for getting elected, as they have a reliable support base whose also very rich and very well connected to the lower rungs in rural areas, however their class position and views are incredibly backwards and not in sync to what the urban working class—or even peasantry—want or need.

There is a reason why Peru Libre was supportive of the Second Kim and North Korea in general, and that is because the latter wholly capitulated to the rural landowners and upper peasantry over the working class doing manual labor or urban intelligentsia. This also explains why Peru Libre have the infighting that they have.

Oddly enough, MAS has somehow balanced these interests much better in having a monopoly of sorts over these groups, but sections of the lower stratum of urban and rural working class they have no control over are represented by radicals in the main trade union rallying around the Quispe family and they are seemingly slipping support over middle class Indians. They, unlike PL, do very poorly in getting the non-Quechuan indigenous vote.

He was voted in with a small amount of votes in the first round, in a political climate that wouldn't be favorable to any incumbent (general dislike for politicians  + the effects of the (post)pandemic) , his cabinet has been full of inept and/or corrupt members, he has very weak support even within his own coalition (fur to both Cerrón and the more progressive left wing parties) and he bas burned several bridges (like with Aliaga just before the second round) and he's enacted some very unpopular policies (most notably the curfew due to the truckers protest), among many other factors
