Remember, Tennessee experienced a number of demographics changes in Central Tennessee during the 1990s (esp. the growth of Nashville suburbs) that changed the state from being a toss-up type state to a lean Rep state or likely Rep state in national elections.

In comparison to national numbers, the stats look like this:

2004:  Bush +13
2000:  Bush +5 (with homestate advantage to Dems)
1996:  Dole +7
1992:  About even (right at national average)
1988:  Bush +8
1984:  Reagan -2
1980:  Reagan -9
1976:  Ford -11
1972:  Nixon +15 (for amusement)

The one number I can't explain away with this theory is 1988 to 1992, but it works well otherwise.  Dukakis didn't play well in the South anywho.

Maybe they just don't like New England liberals.  It's a good explanation for the oddities.

Coincidentally, in the same year Reagan underperformed in TN, Al Gore was elected to the United States Senate, although I doubt he helped Mondale at all.

it is too bad that then governor lamar alexander didnt run for that senate seat in 84.  he would have likely beaten gore...and spared us all a lot of annoyance.

Maybe because Eastern Tennessee has always been such a strong Republican area, the rest of the state was more Democratic to counteract them, while in other southern states everyone was a Democrat.

No, then Willie Horton might not have been a 1988 campaign issue.
