former sec. of defense, richard cheney wins a slugfest to claim the 1996 republican nomination, narrowly beating out robert dole and lamar alexander.  most republican voters see cheney as being the best qualified to be president, even though he is lacking in the charisma department.

at the convention, cheney tries hard to get colin powell to join his ticket as the vp pick.  powell refuses, but publically endorses the cheney candidacy.  cheney then asks lamar alexander.  alexander also refuses, citing his desire to run for senator from tennessee since his presidential dreams seem to be over.

in despair, cheney calls his old friend and former boss, former president george bush for advice.  in that call, the former president hints that his son, george w. bush, the governor of texas, may be interested in the number 2 spot.

cheney calls governor bush to offer him the spot.  at first, bush refuses, wanting to stay on for his whole term as governor.  finally bush agrees to join the cheney team.

how would a race between cheney/bush vs. clinton/gore 1996 shape up?

I personally think it would have been very unlikely for Bush to agree to be Cheney's running mate, simply because he must have been harboring ambitions for a 2000 run himself, which would have been dented by a massive defeat. But I don't want to be a party-pooper, so here's a map for Clinton/Gore vs Cheney/Bush in '96:

Woo-hoo!

Walter, it is Cheney's pleasing personality, his unbridled charm, his self depreciating wit, his sunny disposition, and his natural charisma that brings voters in Nevada and Arizona onboard the Cheney western bandwagon.

Cheney would have trouble with the whole not shaking hands part of his career.
