2nd Bundle check. Full recount possible, but administrators apparently disfavor such a move.

Normally holding this seat very narrowly would be seen as a bad result for Labour but it’s all about expectations and since everyone seemed to expect an easy Tory win, a Labour hold even by the narrowest of margins will be seen as a big win for Keir Starmer

A bundle check is when they make sure that none of the bundles of ballots (you will note that they are all neatly tied together like legal documents) are in the wrong place. It is not the same as a recount, which when all of the individual ballots are counted again. There can be full recounts (the whole constituency) or partial ones (a particular group of ballots).

They take forever and generally only switch a few votes so are, as a general rule, only permitted when we're talking a bare handful of votes in it.

Labour <300 is the number going around on twitter, not sure what the source is. First site to report it was BBC, then Sky, then locals - but I saw it before on rando handles.

Galloway's team's group body language displays disappointment right now inside the building.

You love to see it.

Galloway--regrettably--really didn't do that badly in the grand scheme of things.

Glad to have been wrong about Labour. Sad that Galloway hit over 20%

The result is a ing meme, imagine telling people that Galloway would get 22% of the vote but labour would still win.

Interesting that Labour won even though Galloway did much better than his polling.

I'm sure Labour would have lost with any other candidate though.

Phew…

If you’d told me Galloway would get that much, I’d have expected a Tory win.  I wonder where Galloway’s vote actually came from: did he actually get a decent share of the Heavy Woollen Indies vote, for a start?

It looks like there would have been a swing to Labour if Batley and Spen used preferential voting, Labour got lucky with a split opposition in 2019 and the Tories couldn't win despite a split opposition now.

What I've been hearing is that he did eat into Labour's vote, but Leadbeater flipped a good chunk of former Tory voters to compensate.

I suspect that the answer to a lot of this, yes, is an unexpectedly good result for Labour in the Spen Valley (less Heckmondwike), the sort of numbers they used to poll long ago and far away when it was a very different place to today. In other words, an example of 'It's Not Cricket' syndrome in action: when there's a rallying effect from unlikely quarters towards a candidate subjected to noisy and personally abusive opposition.

Galloway isn't accepting the election results and promising to sue to get it set aside.

I see this is some people's first time experiencing the perennial oddball that is George Galloway.

I greatly admired Galloway in the mid-2000s as someone who, like most left-of-center Americans my age, cut my political teeth on opposing the Iraq War and the religiously-inflected jingoism that went along with it. Of course, I was twelve at the time.

323 vote margin. Lol, Starmer already fêteing himself for barely holding on here. Rayner should run, it's time for this assclown to go.

These things are an expectations game. Labour barely holding a seat like this is objectively a travesty, but considering that it's the first seriously contested by-election this Parliament where the incumbent party hasn't been unceremoniously turfed out on a massive swing, it starts to look a lot like the shiniest turd.
