Turnout 46.3%. Not bad for December in a pandemic.

My hunch was that it seemed higher than expected and the Lib Dems briefed that they wanted higher turnout…

We should all remember this by-election is happening because Boris Johnson was too weak to say no to a bunch of dinosaurs on his backbenches who wanted to protect their mate.

Claims of a “four figure majority” but I imagine not at the lowest end of that range or they wouldn’t be so confident yet.

Lib Dems ‘confident’ about comfortable win

Christine Jardine, the Liberal Democrat’s treasury spokesperson, has said she is “confident” the Liberal Democrats have “won comfortably”.

For Boris Johnson, she says, “the party is over”.

Might be spin - but felt worth posting.

That isn't spin, that's dancing on the grave.  They didn't do this earlier this year with a large majority.  Must be a big ass win for them to do this without them getting a sh**te ton of egg on the face from a defeat.

Why would it be spin? The votes have been cast.

You know ordinarily even very disastrous by-elections don't matter much, but sometimes I suppose... certainly one would wonder...

Not even close.

This is a seat the Tories should never have dreamed of losing. To say the result is catastrophic is an understatement.

Looks like 34.1%.  The Christchurch swing was 35.4%.  (No other Con to Lib Dem swings come close, even Newbury.)

Anyway, this whole by-election has been an entertaining Tory car crash from start to finish.
