Horrible City. What's even worse is that their high school's mascot is the Don. Doniphan Dons. Doniphan Donettes for girls.

It's a shame that they rebuilt after my great-great grandfather led the regiment that burned the town to the ground during the Civil War.

About the only good thing about this place is the beautiful Current River.

What does "Dons" mean?

I stopped in Doniphan in the summer of 2018. The river makes it a very picturesque place. The nominal reason for the stop was a nice quilt shop my wife wanted to visit. The owner talked to us about the hard times in town that fluctuates with the number of tourists visiting. I suspect it was particularly tough during the pandemic.

What does "Dons" mean?

It stands for Dons as in the Spanish noblemen (or noblepeople, I guess, to be PC).

Again, terrible mascot. Even worse than the Campbell Camels or the Cabool Bulldogs. (I used to work at a newspaper where I covered local high school sports, so that's how I know all of these podunk towns' mascots.) We used to play Doniphan in volleyball when I was in high school. They were terrible (and still are to this day).
