Rest in peace - terribly tragic that he spent the last couple years of his life as a victim of elder abuse by some idiot white teenagers

RIP to the guy who famously sold his vote for the opportunity to screw another congressman's secretary.
It’s funny how centrists act like you’re so crude for bringing up Kamala sleeping with Willie Brown, but then they casually say stuff like this

It's not crude to say that Harris slept with Willie Brown, it's crude to say that she did it to sleep her way to the top and to call her a slut or other misogynistic names.  There's no evidence that their relationship was anything other than a genuine romantic relationship.  Just incel fantasies that latched on in the we-hate-Kamala universe.

With Gravel, on the other hand, he openly admitted that he had sex with Elizabeth Ray.  Ray has said she was offered to Gravel in exchange for his flipping his vote.  Naturally Gravel denies that part of the story.  But he also denied for decades that he ever slept with Ray at all and only admitted it once his political career was over, so he's definitely the less-trustworthy party.

Very strange man, I wouldn’t call him an FF but many things he did (Pentagon Papers) were absolutely FF moves

Way too far-left for me personally, but an American hero for what he did with the Pentagon Papers. RIP to a real one Cry

Gravel's one of those people who had clear political beliefs and stuck to them.

Why else would a 29 year old sleep with a 60 year old influential politician?

A man who didn’t give a damn what people thought of him, not to mention having probably the most eccentric campaign in 08 on the democratic side (or maybe the election as a whole unless you wanna make the argument for Ron Paul).

RIP.

Also correct me if I’m wrong, but since he ran in the 2020 election at the age of (I believe) 89, is he the oldest presidential candidate in American history?

The thing is, moderate Republicans like yourself are eager to excuse past wrongdoings on a much higher scale, like Bill Clinton's repeated adultery, a possible rape, and general abuse of power, but jump on politicians who may have made a mistake or two in their personal lives because they're not Joe Manchin clones. I am arguably one of the more prudish people on this forum, but people make mistakes. Vietnam was a mistake (and Gravel, unsuccessfully, fought to end the draft). The Iraq War was a mistake. And I'm also not necessarily convinced that Gravel had sex with Ray in exchange for his vote, which was on a building project that he probably would have ended up voting for anyway.

Quote
[Gravel] once famously envisioned a huge, Teflon-dome on the south side of what was then Mount McKinley National Park covering a temperature-controlled “Denali City” complete with hotels, shopping centers, condominiums and a golf course.

Truly an idealist, he was. The adultery was bad, but the bill in question was fairly inconsequential even if it was a sleazy trade deal.

The 29th will be the 50th anniversary of the Senate subcommittee on Public Buildings and Grounds entering the Pentagon Papers into the official record.

He might be with Harold Stassen and Peter Cooper the next 2.
