Do trends usually last that long? I mean do we really except the same trend to keep going for 2 more decades? Seems unlikely.

Its possible but the presence of a trade minded Democrat with strong ties to working class voters in contrast to a standard fiscally conservative non-incumbent GOP would hinder the transformation but it is worth pointing out that there are other factors at work, cultural, education and such forth that are strong determinant factors as to how this plays out as well.

California was more or less trending D from 1980-2016 (it seems to have finally ended now).

Yeah, I expect the trend to continue, but Biden being the president after Trump instead one of the younger all social issues, all the time candidates has slowed it down considerably.
