Bernie Republicans

Bernie actually got a lot of support from some Republicans. Because Bernie is more left-wing than any President, it is worth looking into.

Plenty of these Republicans were opposed to stuff like abortion or gay marriage but had rural constituents or other poor demographics who wanted or needed federal support.

Bernie was never known for compromising during his 25 years in Congress. But he made several deals with these representatives to get his agenda passed, usually trading support for some bill for subsidies for those districts.

The 2018 mid-terms would be the first to occur under several new voting rights legislation:

VRA of 2017: All polling places must either be equal to the state average in area or population, and all people in line to vote when the polls close are allowed to vote. Polling places may also not be closed before closing time without express authorization from a federal judge in the district and the Associate Attorney General for Voting Rights after both consider the request, which can only be issued by the governor.

FDA of 2017: Requires that all congressional districts be drawn by non-partisan commissions.

Fair Redistricting bills that favored dems. If based off previous maps it would be a ~30 seat loss.

That's an explanation, but that doesn't make it any less blursed.

Now they get congressional representation (one district to themselves) and senators.

It was a needed concession for votes.
